Nature
The 590-hectare Parížske močiare protected area is also the only confirmed breeding site of the sedge warbler in Slovakia. The Čenkovská step National Nature Reserve is one of two national nature reserves within the Čenkov protected area and is home to Slovakia’s only occurrence of Ephedra distachya.
Žitavský luh is a 124-hectare protected area in the Nové Zámky District and preserves the last remnant of an original meandering watercourse. Each year, spotted crake and western marsh harrier breed there; the area is also an important resting and migration site for waterbirds, particularly garganey. Kamenínske slaniská is a 144.74-hectare Natura 2000 site in Kamenín and Kamenný Most in the Nové Zámky District. Berek Forest Park in Nové Zámky features oak trees more than 200 years old.
Culture
The Ján Thain Museum has permanent exhibitions on archaeology, history, ethnography, and notable figures from the region. At the same time, it researches, collects, and makes accessible the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and the surrounding area – from archaeological finds and historical and ethnographic collections to valuable library holdings.
The Ernest Zmeták Art Gallery offers permanent exhibitions of European art from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as a permanent exhibition on Lajos Kassák. It also organizes guided tours with commentary, workshops, lectures, and film screenings.
The Palárikovo hunting lodge is open to visitors seasonally; guided tours take place on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The late Neoclassical building features an extensive English park and a unique technical monument, a wooden water tower.
The Orthodox synagogue in Nové Zámky, which has been preserved to this day, is rectangular, single-storey, and has a choir; the synagogue and its grounds contain several Holocaust memorials. Group and individual visits can be arranged in advance through the tourist information office or by email.
History
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Nové Zámky was built in 1584 and 1585. The Baroque Trinity group dates from 1749 and commemorates the major plague epidemic of 1740. The preserved bastions of the Nové Zámky fortress still reveal the former fortification and the hexagonal layout of the town. The Calvary of Nové Zámky dates from 1779 and is located on the preserved Forgách Bastion.
The archaeological tell of Zámeček near Nitriansky Hrádok was formed by the accumulation of settlements from several generations about 5,000 years ago.
Wellness
The geothermal water of Podhájska was tapped in 1973 and reaches temperatures of up to 83°C at a depth of 1,900 meters. Podhájska Thermal Bath uses highly mineralized geothermal medicinal water whose mineral composition is comparable to that of the Dead Sea. The thermal bath includes the Aquamarin wellness center with bathing, vitality, and sauna areas, as well as massage services.
The Vadaš Thermal Resort in Štúrovo covers 25 hectares and has nine pools.
The 30.5-kilometer cycling loop around Burda begins and ends in Štúrovo in the Nové Zámky District and runs through Kamenica nad Hronom, Chľaba, and Leľa. Žitavská paprika has Protected Designation of Origin status in the European Union.
Geographical location
The Danube forms part of the southeastern border of the Nové Zámky District with Hungary. Road border crossings in the Nové Zámky District are located in Štúrovo and Salka. Nové Zámky and Palárikovo are important railway junctions in the Nové Zámky District.
