Srňacie: Accommodation, Folk Architecture and Bell Tower

Culture

Elements of 19th-century folk architecture have been preserved in Srňacie. Traditional architectural features include original granaries. Several log houses are currently privately owned. The architectural heritage also includes an open wooden bell tower structure with a single bell. Based on its overall appearance and construction details, the wooden bell tower can be dated to the second half of the 19th century. Thus, the visible architectural forms focus both on the preserved architecture and the bell tower’s distinctive character.

History

The first written mention of Srňacie dates from 1548. During the Second World War, Srňacie was a communications centre of Lower Orava; the Signál partisan group operated there. The history of the locality therefore encompasses both an early written reference and a clearly identified wartime connection.

Routes and Access

From the end of Medzihradné, an approximately 30-minute walk through forests and mountain meadows leads to Srňacie. The reconstruction of the access road to the Srňacie district improved access for motorists and cyclists. Route B also passes through Srňacie: the section via Pustá poľana offers beautiful views of Choč and then continues through Srňacie. On the return journey to Dolný Kubín, the official Route B passes through Srňacie. Thus, a walk, the access road and the course of Route B are each described with their own points of departure and destination.

Music

In Srňacie, Dolný Kubín, the Summer Time Music school was held with intensive interpretation courses, individual lessons and group work. In addition to the architectural and historical references, an organised form of musical instruction is therefore also among the locality’s stated associations.
