Párnica: ski hotel, Čierna slope and Párnické Lakes

Párnica is home to the Šport centrum Lučivná SKI. Its ski runs are located in the Lesser Fatra National Park in the valley of the Zázrivka River; the facilities include a ski school and ski and snowboard rental. The Čierna black run is 1,400 metres long, covers an elevation difference of 504 metres and has an average gradient of 36 percent.

Geographical setting

Párnica lies on the southwestern edge of the Orava Highlands and at the northeastern foothills of the Lesser Fatra. The village stretches through the Orava valley on both banks of the Zázrivka stream. Thus, the terms and landscapes of the highlands, mountain foothills and river valley meet here. Párnica is also home to a thermal mineral spring.

Nature

The Párnické Lakes are a defining natural area. They comprise 21 lakes of varying sizes that formed on the Orava floodplain through gravel extraction between 1957 and 1997. The ecosystem is inhabited by beavers. A 1.5-kilometre educational trail runs around the lakes; it is estimated to take about 30 minutes at a brisk pace. The trail begins at the bus stop in Párnica, where there is an information board and signposts. The educational trail is also suitable for cyclists.

At the EKOcentrum Pod Širákom on the Párnické Lakes, there is an open-air classroom with an interactive table about the local wildlife. At the EKOcentrum Pod Širákom, signposts lead to an educational fox trail and to a beaver bay.

Culture

Párnica’s first community museum is the Izba starých materí. It comprises a rural parlour, a barn and a room with historical documents, including photographs. The museum displays 230 exhibits. They were lent or donated by residents and by people who come from Párnica.

Visitors can take part in workshops at Ateliér Rabada. Traditional local crafts in Párnica included wagon making, carpentry and wood carving. In the workshops at Ateliér Rabada, visitors can design and make their own original Modrotlač pattern. A guided tour of Ateliér Rabada also provides an opportunity to learn about the Modrotlač production process.

The first known written mention of Párnica dates from 1420. At that time, the place appears as “Villa Parnice” and as a subject village of Orava Castle. The Evangelical church in Párnica is a monumental church building. It was built in 1926–1927 according to a design by the architect J. Burjan and features echoes of Cubist decorative elements. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The altarpiece was created by M. Mitrovský and is dated 1928.

Events

The traditional Párnickô švábkobraňá festival will take place on 22 and 23 August 2026 in Párnica’s sports grounds. The programme includes folklore, music, crafts, traditional food and entertainment for the whole family.
