Dolný Kubín: ski hotel between slopes, Orava and culture

Dolný Kubín lies in the southwest of the Orava Highlands, on their border with Orava Magura. The Orava River flows through the town, dividing it into two parts. The Kuzmínovo leisure centre is the particularly specific location for winter sports: it has illuminated cross-country and downhill ski slopes, located 400 metres from Dolný Kubín’s historic square.

Winter and nature

The Kuzmínovo educational trail begins at the Jewish cemetery in Dolný Kubín. It follows the access road to the Kuzmínovo chalet and then continues to two shelters along the cross-country ski trails. Eight information boards along the route provide information about Dolný Kubín, the Kuzmínovo area and the animals, medicinal plants and mushrooms found there. There are also two interactive boards for children.

The municipal cycle network includes the 43-kilometre Pod Kuzmínovom–Medzihradné route. There is also a year-round aquapark with pools, a wild-water river, whirlpools, slides, a sauna world, a spacious fitness centre and a massage and rehabilitation centre.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is Dolný Kubín’s oldest cultural and historical monument. Its tower dates from the 14th century, while the late Gothic altar dates from the beginning of the 16th century. The church also contains a Renaissance epitaph of the Zmeškalovci family from 1622. Hviezdoslav Square is the town’s most important medieval urban monument and is lined with several Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses.

The Župný dom dates from the last third of the 17th century and houses the Orava Gallery with its permanent exhibitions. They showcase 20th-century Slovak visual art, works by the Orava woodcarver Štefan Siváň, and a selection of traditional folk art.

The Hviezdoslav Museum is considered Slovakia’s oldest literary museum. In addition to Vavrinec Čaplovič’s book collections, it presents the life and work of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav. The Čaplovič Library exhibition includes manuscripts, incunabula dating from before 1500, and valuable art and map collections from the historical library holdings. A public exhibition is also dedicated to the scholar and private book collector Vavrinec Čaplovič, as well as the fields of knowledge represented in his historical collection.

The Jewish Cemetery of Dolný Kubín lies near the historic centre and is open to the public on request. It preserves original gravestones, the oldest of which dates from 1857. The T. H. Florin Memorial Room has been open to the public in the Florin House since 1997. It contains the original furnishings, collections of poetry, personal belongings and biographical information. The Florin House is currently also used for temporary exhibitions in the fields of social sciences and natural history, prepared by the P. O. Hviezdoslav Orava Museum.

Events

Hviezdoslavov Kubín is a nationwide competition and showcase of the artistic recitation of poetry and prose, as well as the work of recitation groups and children’s, youth and adult poetry theatres. The tradition has existed since 1954. The 72nd edition of Hviezdoslavov Kubín took place in Dolný Kubín from 16 to 20 June 2026.
