Modra: Ceramic Culture, Urban History and Nature

Modra combines a distinctive ceramic history with historic buildings, wine tradition and notable destinations in its natural surroundings. Modra is home to museums, galleries, archaeological sites, a mine tunnel, a natural monument, a lookout tower and a cycle path.

Culture

The Ľudovít Štúr Museum presents collections relating to Ľudovít Štúr, as well as the history and cultural and ethnographic traditions of Modra and the surrounding region. Visitors can see four permanent exhibitions there. The museum is housed in the Emresz House, where Štúr died in 1856.

Ceramics shape other cultural sites in the city. The Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture presents the history of ceramics in Modra, as well as traditions associated with life in the guild organisation. The majolica tradition in Modra dates back to the establishment of a ceramics industrial school in 1833. Slovenská ľudová majolika Modra offers workshops for visitors.

The Ignác Bizmayer Gallery displays, among other works, figurative ceramics by Ignác Bizmayer, Jozef Franko and Marián Liška. It is located in a historic structure that was part of a defensive bastion. Modra therefore highlights both the development of local ceramics and specific works, as well as the architectural evidence of their presentation.

History

Of the city’s former fortifications, Horná brána is the only one of the three city gates that has survived to this day. It is occasionally open during exhibitions and events. An older historical trace can be found at Zámčisko, where an archaeological site contains the remains of a Slavic hillfort dating from the late 9th century. Below Zámčisko, there is also a 200 m-long mine tunnel that is freely accessible.

Wine

Pivnica u Pradeda is a historic wine cellar in the centre of Modra with a tradition spanning more than 500 years. Guided wine tastings are offered there. The venue therefore combines a historic cellar location in the centre with a specifically named tasting service.

Nature

Protected natural features include Tisové skaly, a natural monument with the fifth level of protection. A lookout tower was built in 2018 on the site of an older lookout tower and offers an excellent view of the wider surroundings.

Cycle Paths

The cycle path is 4.96 km long and mostly asphalted. There are rest areas and bicycle repair stations along the cycle path. Its length, surface characteristics and available stations are therefore specified, as are the rest opportunities along the route.
