The reservoir of Nitrianske Rudno was built on the Nitrica River between 1951 and 1958. It covers 89.7 hectares and has a total volume of 4.410 million cubic metres. Originally, it served to supply water to the Nováky thermal power plant and chemical works.

Geographical Location
The mountains Rokoš and Čierny Vrch are located in the vicinity of Nitrianske Rudno. The mountains Holý Vrch and Okruhlý Vrch are also in the surrounding area. The Church of Svätý Vendelín and the Church of Púšť are likewise located nearby.
Nature and Trails
The Fraňa-Madva educational trail begins in Nitrianske Rudno and ends in Nitrianske Sučany. It leads through beech, pine and oak forests as well as meadows, and features rock formations with views of the Rudnianska Valley. In addition to Brložná Cave, the Fraňa-Madva Trail includes a short ascent secured with chains.
A nature trail at the Nitrianske Rudno reservoir provides information about the local flora and fauna as well as significant habitats in the Strážovské vrchy and in protected Natura 2000 areas.
The traditional Fraňa-Madva March took place for the 29th time in 2026 and led to Madvova studnička. The 2026 march led from the area of Madvova studnička to Nitrianske Sučany and was 11.7 kilometres long.
Water and Events
During the summer months, the Nitrianske Rudno reservoir offers opportunities for swimming, water sports, cultural events, concerts and auto-moto gatherings. It is used by recreational anglers during the fishing seasons. Motocross races for the Mayor’s Cup were held in the Kaňová area in 2024 and 2026.
Culture and Tradition
The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Andrej-Svorad and Benedict was built between 1804 and 1816 on the site of a wooden church destroyed by fire. A Lourdes grotto is located on the church grounds south of the entrance; the Fraňa-Madva monument was also erected there in 1925.
DĽH spod Rokoša performs songs from Upper Nitra and focuses particularly on the Rudnianska Valley. The Rokôška folklore ensemble has maintained its folklore activities since 1986 and regularly performs at folklore events in the region and beyond. Various events preserve folk customs, traditions and traditional crafts in Nitrianske Rudno. The village is also associated with a mining tradition.
Horný kaštieľ, also called Javorčekeje dom, is considered the oldest house in Nitrianske Rudno. Fraňa Madva was involved in botany as well as the collection and study of medicinal plants, and was widely sought after as a folk healer.
