Sadova: Winter Trails, Mountain Lakes and Easter Traditions

In winter, horse-drawn carriage or sleigh rides along Sadova’s village roads are among the outdoor experiences on offer. The winter trails complement a wide range of activities, from tranquil landscape routes to special cultural encounters.

The Via Transilvanica runs through Sadova. The route can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Moldova River also crosses the village and is navigable by kayak in some sections. Northeast of Sadova, Măgura Runcului is considered a suitable location for paragliding. ATV rides are also offered as an outdoor experience in the forests around Sadova.

The Sadova–Pasul Mestecăniș route leads through forests and clearings and offers views of the Rarău Massif and Pietrele Doamnei. Along this route, the path continues from Lake Iezer for a few hundred metres on the main road before turning onto Valea Ioanei. Nature and Landscape

Lake Iezer-Feredeu is a mountain lake. Its basin was formed when mountain valleys were dammed by large-scale landslides. Obcina Feredeului is a protected mountain area of the Maramureș and Bukovina Carpathians, with a visitor and information centre, several access points, trails, and tourist and thematic routes.

Lake Iezer is more than 900 years old; its first documented mention dates back to 1594. Lake Bolătău lies in a remote location in a dense spruce forest and is associated with local legends. Thus, geological landforms stand alongside historical and narrative connections in one place.

Culture

In Sadova, the traditional decoration of Easter eggs is still practised by women and passed on to younger generations. Preserved Easter customs include egg tapping and children searching for red eggs.

Visitors can experience an authentic dance performance by the “Flori de Bucovina” ensemble. Visitors can also take traditional dance lessons with Lică Latiș. The Sfântul Gheorghe Church stands at the foot of Muncel Mountain and offers panoramic views of Câmpulung, Pojorâta and Fundul Sadovei.
