Pojorâta – Ski Resort, Hiking and Culture

The municipality of Pojorâta is home to the private ski resort at Pasul Mestecăniș. The pass is also a reference point on the Via Transilvanica: the long-distance route runs through Bucovina and across the Obcinele Bucovinei to Pasul Mestecăniș in the municipality of Pojorâta. Winter sports and the long-distance hiking route meet here at the same pass, but remain independent offerings with different routes.

Pojorâta therefore combines a specific winter destination with a cross-regional route and the landscape areas of Bucovina and the Obcinele Bucovinei. Activities

Mountain Bike Route 6 begins in the municipality of Pojorâta on a forest road and has an elevation gain of 820 metres. Hiking is possible on Mount Muncel; further hikes lead to the Adam and Eva mountains. This provides both a mountain bike route with a defined starting point and elevation gain, as well as several mountain hikes.

The road from the centre of Pojorâta to the foot of the Rarău is 15 km long. This stretch is part of the road route and should be distinguished from the hikes on Muncel, Adam and Eva and from Mountain Bike Route 6. Different types of activities and route details provide a clear basis when comparing paths by means of transport and length.

Nature

In the immediate surroundings of Pojorâta, the Pietrele Doamnei rock formations are located in the Rarău Massif at an elevation of 1,634 m. The rocks were declared a natural monument in 1955. The natural features therefore include both their location in the Rarău Massif and their elevation and the date on which they were placed under protection.

For a winter trip, Pojorâta can be combined with the private ski resort at Pasul Mestecăniș and the mountain and landscape features mentioned above. The 820 metres of elevation gain on the mountain bike route, the 15-kilometre road to the foot of the Rarău and the elevation of the Pietrele Doamnei are separate details concerning the route, terrain and landscape.

Culture and Spirituality

The local cultural and religious landscape includes the Orthodox Sf. Nicolae Church with seven towers. It was built in 1901. The Sfântul Ioan Iacob Corlăţeni Monastery is also located in Pojorâta, in Suceava County, and holds a service every day.

Pojorâta Monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Ioan Iacob. It was re-established as a monastery on 15 June 1990. The church and monasteries thus form independent religious sites within the local landscape.

History

Pojorâta’s historical identity is connected with guard posts along the North Moldavian Road. This road connected Suceava with Bistrița in Transylvania. The Cheile Pojorîtei were considered a suitable location for guarding the road.
