Culture

The “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Dimitrie” Church in Fundu Moldovei was built between 1819 and 1822. In Fundu Moldovei de Sus stands the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church, built in 1800.

The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Monastery in Orata was consecrated on 26 September 1954. Orata Monastery is a tourist destination in the municipality of Fundu Moldovei. The “Gospodăria Fundu Moldovei” ensemble, dating from 1876–1900, is also part of the local cultural landscape.

The traditional house from Colacu dates from 1901 and is exhibited at the Village Museum and Museum of Folk Art in Bucharest. An ethnographic museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the Dimitrie-Gusti School in the village of Fundu Moldovei.

The municipality’s traditional house type developed from a one-room dwelling into a house with a cold entrance area, pantry and single room, and then into a house with two rooms and a central entrance area. Preserved domestic crafts include weaving, sheepskin processing, sewing and embroidery.

The municipality also has a cultural connection beyond its local area: in 1937, a group of farmers from Fundu Moldovei took part in a major folk festival at London’s Albert Hall with traditional instruments, dances and customs. On 25 March, the municipality hosts the national Orthodox festival of religious choral music, “Buna Vestire”. The church dedication festival in Fundu Moldovei is celebrated on 26 October, the feast day of Saint Demetrius; on Saint Elias’ Day, the “Rapsod Ilie Cazacu” folk music groups festival takes place. On the second day of Easter, the municipality hosts the “Balul gospodarilor”.

Trails and Landscape

The 136-kilometre section of the Via Transilvanica in Suceava County passes through Fundu Moldovei. The stage from Fundu Moldovei to Vatra Dornei is classified as moderately difficult. Different route lengths and difficulty levels help assess the extent and challenge separately.
