Nature and Landscape
As part of a programme to promote tourism, a forest museum was developed in Siculeni. The landscape combines different forms of the municipality’s terrain with forests, natural meadows and mineral resources. The elevations range from 550 to 800 metres, providing a clear framework for its geographical setting.
Culture and History
The Zöld-Péter School is listed in the heritage register for Siculeni under house number 225. The building was constructed in 1885 and represents the introduction of regular schooling in Siculeni. Another historical connection is embodied by the Siculicidium Monument: it commemorates the massacre of 7 January 1764, in which Austrian imperial troops killed more than 200 Szekler martyrs. The monument is listed in the Harghita County heritage register as a historic monument and was inaugurated on 8 October 1905.
Religious architecture includes the Jézus Szíve Church and the Siculicidium Chapel. The church was consecrated in 1923 in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; the chapel was consecrated in summer 2017.
Events and Traditions
The Siculicidium commemoration takes place every year on 7 January in Siculeni. On 4 July, it is followed by the annual “Thousand Szekler Girls” gathering, which celebrates the traditional costume as well as the customs and traditions of Hungarians in Central Transylvania.
A distinct seasonal tradition is the annual Onion Festival. Its Saturday centrepiece is the onion trail with six stations, where food, wine and music are brought together. Traditional crafts associated with Siculeni include woodcarving and the production of traditional Szekler gates. In the area around Siculeni, Kürtőskalács is considered the best-known dessert.
Memorial Hike
The Siculicidium Memorial Hike in Siculeni was held for the seventh time and combines historical commemoration with a community and tourism experience. Its main route is approximately 15 km long and has an elevation gain of 530 m. The differing combination of distance and elevation gain clearly defines the hike as a programme item in its own right.
Arrival and Transport
The municipality of Siculeni is crossed by the DN12 national road between Brașov and Toplița, which is also designated as European route DE578. Siculeni is also considered an important railway junction.
