Defileul Jiului National Park is a protected mountain landscape with rocks, limestone cliffs, peaks, gorges, waterfalls, alpine meadows and forests. Hiking trails pass through part of 22 habitats of national and European interest. Themed trails offer views of forests, clearings, sunny pastures, and steeper and gentler mountain ridges.
Nature
Cheile Sohodolului is a karst landscape approximately 12 kilometres long in the Vâlcan Mountains between Runcu and Poiana Contului. The gorge is accessible via national road 67D and can be traversed by car, bicycle or on foot. The Sohodol Valley is also a floristic nature reserve with plant species that are rare in the Romanian flora.
Cheile Oltețului is located in the north-east of Gorj County, within the administrative territory of the municipality of Polovragi, and is part of a nationally protected natural area. Peștera Polovragi has approximately 10 kilometres of passages mapped by speleologists; 800 metres of the gallery are accessible to visitors.
Rafting is possible in Defileul Jiului National Park on designated sections of the Jiu River. Cycling is currently possible there on the Plaiului Bumbești access route recognised by the local community.
Culture and History
The Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu was created in 1937–1938 to commemorate the people who died defending the city during the First World War. It extends across two parks connected by the Avenue of Heroes and includes the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, located along the axis. The ensemble combines abstract sculpture, landscape architecture, engineering and urban planning.
The Museum of Folk Architecture in Curtișoara allows visitors to explore more than 30 old wooden houses and farmsteads assembled into an open-air village museum. The museum also includes the Tătărescu Ensemble, the Saint John the Baptist Church dating from 1821, and historic water-powered facilities.
The Polovragi Monastery, which administered the cave for 300 years, is located near Cheile Oltețului and Peștera Polovragi. Lainici Monastery has a collection of religious objects and old books.
The Casa Muzeu “Constantin Brâncuși” in Hobița is a historic monument of folk architecture from the second half of the 19th century. Tismana Monastery was founded by Saint Nicodemus with the support of Voivode Radu I (1377–1383).
