Portugal between World Heritage, Nature and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Portugal
Portugal is a particularly interesting destination if you would like to combine cultural sites, distinctive landscapes, hiking routes and regional culinary experiences. The highlights range from UNESCO sites and museums to geoparks and birdwatching, as well as Douro wine and olive oil. When choosing a hotel, it therefore helps to consider which of these aspects should shape your stay.
UNESCO culture: Portugal has 17 sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Rock art: The Côa Valley is home to a 17-kilometre-long open-air gallery of rock art.
Hiking region: The Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark has around 180 km of hiking trails.
Olive oil: Portugal has six olive oil regions with a protected designation of origin, the DOP.
Birdwatching: More than 100 bird species can be observed relatively easily in a single day in the Tagus Estuary; the estuary is 20 minutes from Lisbon.
Wine experience: At wine tourism establishments, visitors can take part in the grape harvest in September and October.
Culture between World Heritage, music and craftsmanship
Several Portuguese cultural sites give a trip very different accents. The Alto Douro wine region is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as is the cultural landscape of Sintra. The laurel forest of Madeira is listed as a natural World Heritage site in Portugal. Wine landscapes, historically shaped cultural areas and a distinctive natural heritage thus stand side by side without merging into a single type of landscape.
Music and handicrafts can also be discovered independently. Fado has been part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2011. The permanent exhibition at the Museu do Fado traces the history of fado from its origins in the 19th century to the present day. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo presents the history of azulejos in Portugal; its collection covers Portuguese azulejo production from the second half of the 15th century to the present day. The museum is housed in the former Convento da Madre de Deus.
For visitors interested in history, the University of Coimbra and the Côa Valley add to the cultural picture. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290. With its rock art, the open-air gallery in the Côa Valley offers a different focus from urban museums and historic places of learning. Depending on personal interests, a hotel stay can therefore be shaped more by urban history, music, ceramic art or an archaeological landscape.
Landscapes, geoparks and trails
Portugal offers several clearly distinct natural and geological areas. Peneda-Gerês National Park was established in 1971. The Tejo Internacional Nature Park is part of the Naturtejo Geopark, while the Naturtejo Geopark has more than 17 geomonuments. The Arouca Geopark has 41 geosites. Portugal’s geoparks in the UNESCO network include Naturtejo, Estrela, Oeste, Arouca, Terras de Cavaleiros and the Azores.
Those who prefer to explore landscapes on foot will also find different formats. The Paiva Walkways cross the Arouca Geopark over a distance of 8 km. The complementary circular routes of the Rota Vicentina cover a total of around 263 km and lie between Santiago do Cacém and Lagos. Many routes of the Rota Vicentina were already known to pilgrims who set out from Cabo de São Vicente for Santiago de Compostela. Marked trails lead to viewpoints, so it is not only the trail length that matters, but also the combination of exercise and experiencing the landscape.
The Douro is suitable for travel planning focused more strongly on landscapes. The Douro region can be explored by car to visit viewpoints and wineries. A route along the Douro can link Vila Nova de Foz Côa, the Alto Douro wine region and the city of Porto. The Douro Valley is considered the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. The combination of route, viewpoints and wine culture therefore appeals to a different kind of travel planning than a stay focused primarily on museums or hiking trails.
Experience regional cuisine and wine
Portuguese gastronomy can also be understood through its cultural foundations. The Mediterranean diet, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, is part of the identity of Portuguese gastronomy. It encompasses knowledge, skills, rituals, symbols and traditions relating to cultivation, harvesting, fishing, animal husbandry, preservation, processing and cooking, as well as, in particular, the sharing and consumption of food.
With olive oil, it is not only the product itself that takes centre stage. In several municipalities in the DOP olive oil regions, visitors can visit agricultural cooperatives and taste olive oil produced there. Wine tourism establishments welcome visitors who can get to know vineyards and wineries and taste wines. These offerings combine regional production with tangible insights into processing and enjoyment, and can be planned as an independent focus alongside cultural and nature experiences.
