Sør-Fron: Hiking Trails, Culture and Accommodation
Accommodation in Sør-Fron Municipality
Sør-Fron stretches along both sides of the Gudbrandsdalen, from Rondane in the northeast to Valdres in the southwest; the Gudbrandsdalslågen flows through the valley.
Hiking Between Valley and Mountains
The Pilegrimsleia runs from Frya to Skar through the entire municipality of Sør-Fron and is well marked. The trail network also offers hikes from Harpefoss to Gålå or Sulsetra. This gives you a choice between a route through the municipality and hiking connections to two named destinations.
Another hike follows the Skodalsåa: the cultural trail starts at Svintjønna, at an elevation of 956 metres, passes through Skurdalslia and Skurdalsgrenda, and ends at the Lågen. The hiking options therefore differ in their routes: across the municipality, with Gålå or Sulsetra as a destination, or along the Skodalsåa.
In Hundorp, at Dale-Gudbrands gard, the Dale-Gudbrand Pilgrim Centre provides information about the trail, accommodation, alternative transport and cultural history. It is a useful resource if you are planning a hike and would also like to learn about the region’s history. The Tusenårsstien at Dale-Gudbrands gard presents the farm’s thousand-year history visually, on information boards and through a dedicated app.
Culture and Events
Peer Gynt has been performed at Gålåvatnet in Sør-Fron since 1989. The Peer Gynt Festival takes place annually in early August. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
Kunstarena was established in Harpefoss in 2014 as an art and artist-in-residence centre. It presents exhibitions indoors and outdoors. Harpefoss Hotel hosts events, concerts and festivals, as well as artist residencies and workshops. In Sør-Fron, Rudi Gard also offers concerts and culinary experiences.
For trip planning, this offers a choice of different cultural experiences: a performance at Gålåvatnet, exhibitions and residencies in Harpefoss, and concerts and culinary experiences at Rudi Gard. If your stay is centred around a particular programme, check the dates in advance.
Seasonal Experiences and Leisure
Sør-Fron Municipality organises Stolpejakten every spring and summer. The stated period runs from 1 May to 31 October. Posts are placed on mountain peaks and in the surrounding area; you scan their codes with your mobile phone. As this is a seasonal activity, check the information before your trip.
Fron Badeland in Harpefoss has a 25-metre swimming pool, a 12.5-metre therapy pool, a diving pool, a climbing wall, children’s pools and a 48-metre water slide. The different pools and other facilities offer a different focus from hiking trails and cultural activities.
There is also a specific event to note in winter: major cross-country skiing competitions are held every year at the Gålå Ski Arena. If these competitions are relevant to your travel plans, check the date of the event.
