Gålå offers extensive cross-country ski trails; major cross-country skiing competitions are held every year at the Gålå Ski Arena. In summer and autumn, Gålå’s mountain scenery is ideal for hiking and cycling. This seasonal difference is useful when planning your trip: consider whether you are mainly looking for cross-country skiing or activities in the mountains. Trail grooming and availability vary by season; check conditions before your trip.

Cross-country skiing, roller skiing and trails

The paved trail at Gålå Ski Stadium is another option: it was specifically designed for roller skiing, so its surface and use differ from those of the cross-country ski trails. Access to the roller-skiing route may be seasonal. If you plan to roller-ski, check its accessibility separately for your travel dates.

Near Gålå, the Peer Gynt Trail runs from the hotel area along summer farm paths in the direction of Gålåvatnet. In Gålå, it is signposted to and from Gålå Høgfjellshotell and Wadahl Høgfjellshotell. Check the signs and trail conditions locally.

Peer Gynt and summer farm culture

Peer Gynt has been performed every year at Gålåvatnet since 1989; the performance is considered Norway’s largest open-air theatre production. The tradition is annual, but the programme varies from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

The protected cultural site Solbråsetra has been mentioned in written sources since as early as 1668 and is considered the birthplace of Gudbrandsdalsost. Visitors can meet the milkmaid there and sample freshly made Gudbrandsdalen cheese. This visitor experience is seasonal; check availability for your travel dates.

A guided hike to Valsfjell combines mountain scenery with stories about life at the summer farm and a visit to Solbråsetra. The first rauost was made there in 1863. The tour is offered as a bookable experience; its seasonal availability may change. When planning, it is therefore important to distinguish between visiting the cultural site and taking the guided hike as a separate experience.

Summer and autumn activities

In summer and autumn, Gålå’s mountain scenery offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. Other routes follow gravel roads and summer farm paths, with views and cultural and nature experiences along the way. Gålå also offers horseback riding for all riding levels; availability may vary by season. These activities complement cross-country skiing with a range of options suited to other times of year.

Visitors can go canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or rowing on Gålåvatnet. These activities are available seasonally. At the far end of Gålåvatnet, there are also two small wood-fired saunas available to rent; a sauna visit can be combined with a refreshing swim in the lake. Booking and opening arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check in advance.

Route planning

Peer Gynt vegen includes the toll road between Skeikampen and Gålå. If you plan to use this section, check the current toll rules and prices in advance, as both may change. This helps keep cultural destinations, activities and route planning clearly distinct as aspects of your travel decision.
