Sør-Aurdal in winter: downhill skiing and cross-country skiing
Accommodation in Sør-Aurdal
In Sør-Aurdal, you’ll find a range of options for a winter stay. Stavadalen Ski Centre in Reinli has nine downhill runs, three ski lifts and a dedicated area for tubing and sledding. In Hedalen, the focus is on more than 120 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails. If you’re looking for a ski hotel or accommodation for a ski holiday, your preferred activity can be a useful starting point.
Winter activities in Reinli and Hedalen
Stavadalen Ski Centre offers nine downhill runs and three ski lifts. Tubing and sledding have their own dedicated area. Alongside the downhill runs, these are other specific winter activities that set the centre apart from the slopes.
Reinli is also home to Stavedalen Park, a family park that is open all year round. Its attractions include Valdres’ first indoor play park, a simulator room, an electronic dartboard, air hockey and a café. There is also a Supertube track and ski slopes with runs for beginners and advanced skiers. The information explicitly specifies two skill levels on the slopes, as well as several activities away from them.
If you’re planning to go cross-country skiing, Hedalen has more than 120 kilometres of groomed trails. They pass through high-alpine terrain with far-reaching views, as well as landscapes with extensive marshes and protected forests. The focus is therefore quite distinct: Reinli offers downhill runs, lifts, tubing and sledding, while Hedalen has an extensive trail network and striking scenery.
Culture, nature and trails
Bagn Bygdesamling open-air museum is located on the E16, five kilometres south of Bagn in Sør-Aurdal municipality. The site has 19 buildings. In addition to the buildings, there are several permanent exhibitions, film screenings and an audio station. The museum combines a visit to the historic collection with a variety of exhibition formats.
Bagnsbergatn is the Bergatn farm and a national war memorial. The site is open to hikers all year round. This makes it possible to visit as a cultural and historical destination in its own right, separately from a museum visit.
The Fønhusstigen trail at Kverrvilljuvet, also known as Hølerajuvet, passes through woodland along the Hølera River to a viewpoint at the gorge. Information boards cover history and nature, and include quotations from Mikkjel Fønhus’ books. The route thus combines a scenic walk with information about the surroundings and literary references.
Ørneflag also has a clear geographical distinction: its summit is the highest in Sør-Aurdal municipality and the southernmost in Valdres. The hike follows the DNT route from Storekrak and is about eight kilometres each way. The ascent is listed as taking two to three hours, with an elevation gain of 350 metres. These figures help you assess the time and elevation involved before adding the hike to your plans.
The Begna offers opportunities to fish for trout, perch, pike and vendace. This refers to the stretch of river running south from Bagn in Valdres to Nes in Ådal. Along this longer stretch, both banks of the Begna are easily accessible from the E16 and Austsidevegen; many fishing spots are signposted, and fishing paths run along the riverbank.
