When looking for accommodation in Vossestrand, it’s worth considering the winter activities nearby. Myrkdalen has groomed ski slopes and lifts, while Årmotslia also has cross-country trails. Dog-sledding and cultural attractions are among the options in the area, too.

Skiing and lessons in Myrkdalen

In the area around Vossestrand, Myrkdalen offers 28.5 kilometres of groomed ski slopes. This family-friendly ski centre has 22 varied runs, nine lifts, parks and off-piste terrain. These figures describe different aspects of the facilities: the length of the groomed slopes and the number of runs and lifts. As figures and operating conditions can change, check the latest information before your trip.

Myrkdalen Skiskule offers private and group lessons for all levels in alpine skiing, park, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and telemark skiing. This means the lessons cover disciplines beyond alpine skiing. If you’re comparing different lesson formats or sports for a travel group, this information can help with your planning. It’s best to check with the ski school in advance to find out what’s available during your travel dates.

Cross-country skiing and other winter activities

Årmotslia is a separate cross-country skiing option, opposite the Myrkdalen ski centre. It has groomed trails, including a five-kilometre illuminated route. Grooming and lighting may vary by season, so check the conditions before your visit.

Dog-sledding trips are offered on some days each month at Lake Myrkdalen. The route is four kilometres long and takes approximately 30 minutes. This makes it a different time commitment from a day of skiing; ask the operator about specific dates and availability.

Hiking and scenery nearby

Stalheim Hotel is located around 500 metres above Nærøydalen, at the top of the historic Stalheimskleiva road. Several walking and hiking routes start near the hotel and take you into the surrounding mountains and valley. Access and trail conditions may vary. The 90-metre-high Sendefossen waterfall can be seen from an uphill path.

Kvassdalen is a lush, glacier-carved U-shaped valley. A guided Bike & Hike tour combines a bike ride to Kvassdalen with a walk to the mountain farms near Vetle Grungen. If you’d like to plan this tour, confirm dates and availability with the operator.

Culture and history

A natural-stone memorial, around three metres high, stands by Vinje kyrkje in memory of those killed in the Second World War. Another natural-stone memorial, around 3.5 metres high, stands at the entrance to Oppheim kyrkje. The approximately 200-year-old Gamle Vinje kyrkje was demolished in 1872, and Vossestrand lost an important cultural monument with it.

Stalheim Folkemuseum comprises around 30 historic buildings from Vossestrand and Voss, arranged like an old farmstead. If you’re planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance. The historic buildings and memorial sites offer a cultural complement to the winter activities.

Cycling as another option

Above Myrkdalen Hotel is a purpose-built cycling trail with three short loops: two green and one blue. It’s suitable for beginners and children, while also offering features for more experienced riders; all types of bicycles can be used. The trail is free to access every day. As access and operation may change, check the current conditions before your visit.

There is also an 850-square-metre pump track outside Myrkdalen Hotel. Other cycling options nearby include a skills course with features for different levels and bicycle hire for children and adults. These activities give travellers more options if they’d like to include cycling alongside the ski slopes.
