Vestby: Coastal Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Vestby
When looking for accommodation in Vestby, you can plan your trip around different interests: walks along Kyststien, a stay at Hvitsten strand beach, or the municipality’s cultural and railway history. These places and themes offer different starting points, but they do not form a single route, nor can any particular distance between them be inferred.
Walking and trails in Vestby
Kyststien through Vestby offers long and short walks across varied terrain. The types of paths also vary: the coastal trail uses gravel roads, partly paved roads, farm tracks and paths. When planning a walk, you can therefore take into account both your preferred distance and the different surfaces.
A specially marked cycling route is provided for cyclists on Kyststien. This is relevant when planning a bike ride: the cycling route and the walking trail should not automatically be treated as the same route.
Railway tracks and historic structures
Smaalensbanen is an old railway track through Vestby municipality. It runs from Kjenn and Kjennstjernet through Hølen, across the Hølenviadukten and to Sonsveien station. The route is flat and accessible to everyone. This gives it a different character from Kyststien, with its varied terrain. If you prefer a flat route for your outings, you can take this difference into account when planning.
The protected Hølenviadukten railway bridge has spanned the Såna high above the river since 1879. It has been reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. Rafsal Bru is also one of the municipality’s historic structures: the stone arch bridge dates from before 1850. Both structures provide a tangible connection to railway history and older bridge construction, respectively, but differ in their design and historical context.
Son, Hvitsten and local culture
In the heart of Son is the Son Kystkultursenter, on the site of the former Soon Baadbyggeri. In the centre, Jostushuset tells the story of a fisherman’s house in Son. If you are interested in the history of the village and its fishing industry, you will find a specific cultural and historical focus here.
Hvitsten also combines a waterside stay with a historical connection: Hvitsten strand is a beach, and the old boathouses on the quay are Vestby municipality’s 1,000-year cultural monument. Son Havn offers boat tourists several facilities in a safe harbour.
Art and choosing a focus for your trip
Ramme Art Gallery is an underground art gallery with two underground floors. It displays works by Norwegian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries who lived and created art in the local area. This historical and biographical context sets the gallery apart from the place-based themes at Son Kystkultursenter and the historic structures. If art history matters more to you than walks or coastal stays, it can be the focus of your trip planning.
Trains stop at Sonsveien station. Son and the coastal trail are each a little over 3 km from there.
