Bærum: Nature, Swimming Spots and Culture
Accommodation in Bærum
Bærum offers a variety of reasons to visit: swimming spots, natural areas, trails and cultural attractions. To plan your visit, it helps to group the places you intend to see by interest—for example, beaches and water, nature watching, or art and history. Accommodation in cabins is also among the options described.
Swimming Spots and Activities by the Water
Storøyodden beach is at the far end of Storøya on Fornebu and has been awarded the Blue Flag. Fornebu is surrounded by the fjord and beaches and is home to exceptional biodiversity. If you are planning a stay there, you can combine a visit to the beach with an appreciation of the area’s natural environment.
Kadettangen combines a beach with a park and recreational facilities. It also has a bathing cove that makes swimming easier for people with physical disabilities or who feel unsure in the water. Høvikodden Park also has a swimming spot, as well as sculptures, toilet facilities and a barbecue.
Kalvøya has child-friendly beaches and is a popular walking area. This makes it possible to include the beach and a walk as separate interests in your day’s plans.
Natural Areas and Trails
The Kyststien coastal trail in Bærum is 23 kilometres long and runs from Bjørnsvika to Lysaker. Its length is a useful point of reference if you would like to include a longer coastal walk in your plans. On Fornebu, a cycling loop through the area is a good way to explore. You can use your own bike or rent one from Tier through the municipality of Bærum.
Storøykilen on Fornebu is a particularly species-rich wetland and one of the last remaining wetlands in the inner Oslofjord. Rare birds live there, and during migration the area serves as a resting place for many bird species. Visitors interested in birdlife and wetlands will find a different focus here than at the beach.
The trail to Kolsåstoppen passes through the Kolsås-Dælivann landscape protection area and the Kolsåsstupene nature reserve. The Gudbrandsdalsleden and Tunsbergleden pilgrimage routes also run through Bærum; they meet just northwest of Øverland. This information helps you consider nature trails and pilgrimage routes as separate outing options, without combining them into a single route.
Art, History and Crafts
The Henie Onstad Kunstsenter on Høvikodden is an important venue for international contemporary art. It is surrounded by a large sculpture park. Art lovers can consider both the art centre and the park’s sculptures as places to visit.
The Grini Museum presents the history of the Grini prison camp through film footage, photographs, audio recordings, artefacts and digital technology. The variety of media shapes how the subject is presented. Lommedalsbanen was established in 1978 as Norway’s first narrow-gauge museum railway.
Signs along the Kalkstien explain the limestone in Bærum and the hard manual labour once involved in extracting it. They cover both the period before and the period after the introduction of gunpowder in the 18th century. The trail therefore brings together natural history and the history of limestone work.
Bærums Verk is a marketplace set in the authentic historical surroundings of an ironworks that has shaped Bærum since the early 17th century. The trading centre has around 50 shops, craft businesses, workshops, galleries and places to eat. The sculpture park at Bærums Verk features 28 sculptures by Norwegian artists, with one new sculpture added to the collection each year.
Getting Around and Accommodation
Bærums Verk is served by a direct bus connection: bus 150 from central Oslo and bus 210 from Sandvika. If staying in a cabin is an option for you, Gardlaus is a restored former smallholding that now serves as a forest cabin. It has four beds and access to a shower and toilet. Sæteren gård is a DNT cabin on the pilgrimage route through Bærum and offers several accommodation options.
