Solesio: Hills, History and Cultural Destinations
Accommodation in Solesio
Hills and Historical Heritage
Solesio is located in a hilly area considered to have a favorable southern orientation. The development of the village dates far back in recorded history: the area was already referred to as “Bonda de Solesio” in a document from 1449. Settlement in Solesio probably began in the 17th century. Solesio therefore brings together a distinctive landscape setting and historical traces that can be seen in various places in the village and its surroundings.
The original settlement core of Solesio features a traditional courtyard structure. The original settlement core of Solesio is located on the hilltop around the Oratorio Madonna d’Oropa, which is attributed to the 18th century. The courtyard structure and hilltop location are therefore among the defining features of this old part of the village.
Textile History and Fabbrica della Ruota
An important historical reference point is the former Lanificio Fratelli Zignone, now known as the Fabbrica della Ruota. The former Lanificio Fratelli Zignone began operations in 1878 and finally closed in 1964. The Fabbrica della Ruota is part of the Ecomuseum system of the Province of Biella. The name therefore refers both to a former textile building and to its present integration into this Ecomuseum system.
The textile craftsmanship practiced in Solesio in the 19th century is evidenced by the now-derelict Follone building on the Rio Scoldo. The history of the early inhabitants also leaves a local trace in names: in early settlers’ baptismal records, the name “de Solesio” initially appeared alongside the family name. Together, these two references supplement the architectural evidence with a craft-related and a biographical historical perspective.
