Fiumalbo in the Upper Modenese Apennines
Fiumalbo lies in the upper Modenese Apennines within Parco del Frignano. The town is located near the confluence of the Rio Acquicciola and Rio delle Pozze; the Scoltenna forms from this confluence. Along the paths leading from Fiumalbo, waterways, forests and open grazing land are part of the landscape.
Historic Centre and Religious Architecture
The historic centre preserves a typically medieval urban structure. Alleys, small squares and uphill sections shape the townscape and give a tour a different character from a stay focused exclusively on winter sports. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo Apostolo stands in the centre. It is Fiumalbo’s most important place of worship and, at the same time, the urban focal point of the historic centre.
Trails through Forests, Pastures and an Ancient Cultural Landscape
From Fiumalbo, numerous trails for excursions and walks lead into the park along old mule tracks and former paths used by shepherds and pilgrims. The routes pass through beech forests, fir forests and green pastures, reaching springs and blueberry patches. On hiking trails from Fiumalbo, you will also pass old hay barns with thatched roofs, known as “capanne celtiche”.
A Circular Route with Sentiero CAI 489
A specific circular route begins in Fiumalbo at the small square in front of the pharmacy. Its first section follows Sentiero CAI 489. Before reaching the Muraglioni, you can descend from this circular route to Cascata Salto dell’Acqua and include this detour as an additional option in your route planning.
Winter Days Beyond a Single Activity
In winter, Fiumalbo offers opportunities for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. Here, the two terms refer to different ways of moving through the winter mountain environment: ski mountaineering combines the ascent with skis, while snowshoeing makes it possible to walk on snow-covered paths and terrain.
Capanne Celtiche in Valdare
The Capanne Celtiche are located in the hamlet of Valdare, about six kilometres from Fiumalbo. Their distinctive roofs are designed in a stepped form.
Customs and Events
Fiumalbo hosts the solemn procession in honour of its patron saint, San Bartolomeo. During the procession, the entire town is illuminated by open flames. The characteristic “Presepe Vivente” takes place every two years. It recreates old occupations whose memory is at risk of fading.
A Typical Sweet from the Town Centre
Croccante is a sweet typical of Fiumalbo and is offered exclusively in the pastry shops of the historic centre.
Fishing as an Additional Connection with Nature
Fiumalbo has designated areas for fishing without removing stocked fish.
