Viggiano: Winter Sports, Mountain Trails and Harp Tradition

Viggiano combines a winter ski resort on Monte di Viggiano with challenging trails, nature experiences and a distinctive harp tradition. Montagna Grande di Viggiano is a winter ski resort on the slopes of Monte di Viggiano. The Montagna Grande ski area has two ski lifts and a conveyor belt. The slopes are located in beech forests; the facilities also include a three-kilometre cross-country skiing trail. The documented winter sports offering therefore extends beyond classic downhill skiing and also includes cross-country skiing.

The Montagna Grande ski area also offers snow tubing, Nordic walking, sleigh rides and snowshoe hikes. Equipment can be rented. This creates several options for groups with different interests when planning their winter stay: while some members of the travel group are on the slopes, sleigh rides, snowshoe hikes or Nordic walking provide further activities. Accommodation in Viggiano is not automatically a ski hotel next to the slopes. Hiking Trails between Forest, Gorge and Mountain

Viggiano has a network of trails approximately 30,000 metres long. The trails lead to viewpoints above 900 metres and include routes of medium or high difficulty. For experienced hikers, the Torrente Alli Trail offers a particularly striking landscape: it begins on the municipal road between Viggiano and Montagna Grande and leads to a narrow gorge with steep rock walls.

The Torrente Alli Trail is considered suitable exclusively for experienced hikers. Appropriate equipment and accompaniment by park guides are required. This clearly distinguishes it from a simple short walk around the town and is important when planning your day. The Sentiero delle Rupe Rosse is classified as an alpine trail and includes a visit to two caves. The Sentiero di Santa Maria La Preta ends above a rocky promontory over the Casale stream; a rock church once stood there.

Other trails explore the surrounding area in different ways. The Fontana dei Pastori Path begins at Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII in Viggiano and leads through forests and a beech forest to the Museo del Lupo and the Fontana dei Pastori at an altitude of approximately 1,400 metres. The “Felicetta” Trail initially descends to the Casale stream, crosses the watercourse and then climbs towards the Manche area near Felicetta. The different routes help you choose between mountain landscapes, forests and cultural destinations.

Nature Experience at the Museo del Lupo

The Museo del Lupo is located near the Fontana dei Pastori in Viggiano, at an altitude of approximately 1,400 metres in a beech forest. Nature walks are possible there. The museum displays stuffed wolves and other animal species from the area and provides information about the Appennino Lucano National Park. Educational sessions are also offered, followed by guided tours in the surrounding forest. This excursion destination therefore combines an exhibition with an accompanied nature experience.

Harp Tradition and Historic Sites

In addition to its winter activities, Viggiano has a distinctive musical and historical profile. Viewed from above, Piazza San Giovanni XXIII is shaped like a harp. Small harp bas-reliefs dating from 1858 to 1882 can be found on the portals of some houses and in the keystones of arches in the historic centre. As you walk through the town centre, you encounter the harp not only as a concert instrument but also as a design element of historic buildings.

The Scuola dell’Arpa Viggianese e della Musica was founded in 2008 and recognised by the municipality in 2009 as a cultural institute for the revival of Viggiano’s harp tradition. Classes for the Viggiano branch of the Conservatorio “Gesualdo da Venosa” di Potenza take place in the Villa del Marchese. MUVIG documents the agricultural and pastoral work, crafts and domestic life of historic Viggiano. It is located on the restored ground floor of the Franciscan monastery of Viggiano, whose building dates from 1473.

The Viggiano tourist information office offers a free guided tour of the historic centre by reservation. The Festa della Madonna di Maggio also connects the town and the mountain: on the first Sunday in May, it includes a procession from Viggiano to the mountain. The Antico Tratturo della Madonna di Viggiano once served as a pilgrimage route through the wooded slopes of the Sacro Monte to the sanctuary. The Santuario Basilica Minore del Sacro Monte di Viggiano stands in the Agri Valley on one of the highest mountains in the Apennines, at an altitude of 1,725 metres.

The annual events calendar complements the landscape and cultural themes. The “Review of the Traditional Harp” takes place in Viggiano every year during the first days of August. At the “Vino sotto le stelle” food and wine festival in August, wines bearing the Terre dell'Alta Val D'Agri designation of origin can be tasted. The Festa del Ferricello is another festival held in August, dedicated to Ferricello Viggianese, which has been awarded the DECO designation of origin.
