Culture

One of the notable buildings is the Cattedrale di San Gerardo. Its 18th-century façade was designed by the architect Magri. Inside, the cathedral also preserves remains from the 5th to 6th centuries, attributed to the Sacellum of Sant'Oronzo. A stone bell tower dating from the 12th- to 13th-century construction phase completes the historic appearance.

The Torre Guevara is the surviving part of a castle from the 10th or 11th century. The Teatro Stabile provides a different accent; it opened in 1881 with a performance of La Traviata. At the Pinacoteca Provinciale, you can see a permanent anthological art exhibition dedicated to Concetto Valente. The Ponte Musmeci, in turn, is a work of art created by the engineer Sergio Musmeci in the late 1960s.

History

Traces of different eras can also be found outside the museums. The Ponte San Vito preserves foundations from Roman times and is connected with the construction of the Roman Via Herculia. Villa Malvaccaro is the only Roman villa discovered in the Potenza area. It includes a triclinium with a mosaic floor whose central medallion depicts the Three Graces.

Santa Maria del Sepolcro is considered a settlement of the Knights Templar built at the beginning of the 12th century. Sant'Antonio La Macchia is a hermitage of the Capuchins built in 1530 and lies among green, tree-lined paths.

Museums

The Museo Archeologico Provinciale displays artworks from Hellenistic Metapontum, Magna Graecia and Lucania. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Basilicata Dinu Adamesteanu is located in Palazzo Loffredo and presents important research findings from northern and central Basilicata. Its collection also includes a children's burial assemblage from Vaglio di Basilicata dating from 430 BC.

Routes

The Città Narrata visitor project divides Potenza into 56 places and three routes. The historic route leads from the Cattedrale di San Gerardo to the Scale del Popolo through medieval gates, churches and palaces. Another route of Città Narrata focuses on inscriptions associated with ancient Potentia.

Along the water runs the Parco fluviale del Basento, with a riverside walking path between the Ponte San Vito and the Ponte Musmeci. A footpath along the Basento is suitable for walks and outdoor runs.
