Pietracamela in winter: Prati di Tivo, mountain tours and local history

Pietracamela combines a historic mountain village with a winter sports destination within the same municipality. Arrival and daily planning

For the final road journey to Pietracamela and Prati di Tivo, coming from the direction of Montorio al Vomano, follow the S.S. 80 to the Pietracamela–Prati di Tivo turnoff. The road connection therefore leads to two different destination names within the municipality. If you arrive by train via the Adriatic railway line from the north or south, Teramo is the destination station; from there, continue by TUA bus or car.

Anyone planning a day of skiing in Prati di Tivo should consider the routes between their chosen accommodation and the winter sports location separately. Those who want to combine sightseeing, mountain hikes and museum visits, on the other hand, will find several specific destinations in the village of Pietracamela itself.

Mountain tours and routes to the peaks

One challenging option is the circular route to Pizzo Intermesoli. It begins in the village of Pietracamela at an elevation of 1,005 metres, leads through the valley of the Rio Arno to the Conca del Sambuco and continues to the northern Vetta at 2,483 metres. The route follows the ridge to the main summit of Pizzo Intermesoli at 2,635 metres. Along the way, there are views of the Val Maone and Corno Grande. The return route leads back to Pietracamela via the Val Maone.

The circular route is considered long and challenging and suitable for experienced, well-trained hikers. It is therefore clearly different from a short walk in the village area. For a travel group with differing expectations, such differences may play a role in daily planning: while some people choose the Prati di Tivo ski area, the municipality offers a mountain route with significantly greater demands in the form of the Pizzo Intermesoli circular tour.

La Madonnina dell'Arapietra is an important starting point and access point for ascents to Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo. From Prati di Tivo, you can reach La Madonnina by cable car or via a hiking trail that follows the route of the facility; the walking time is approximately one hour. Arapietra is also a pilgrimage destination for the surrounding valleys. Rifugio Franchetti offers hikers and mountaineers overnight accommodation, meals and a kitchen.

Mountaineering, climbing and other activities

Corno Piccolo has numerous climbing routes on large limestone walls, as well as routes of moderate to high difficulty. Mountain biking is also one of the activities associated with Pietracamela, without this implying any particular route or level of difficulty.

Pietracamela is home to the CEA “Gli aquilotti” environmental education centre of CAI Abruzzo on the slopes of Corno Piccolo. The Museo dell’Alpinismo is also housed in the visitor centre's premises provided by Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The visitor centre in Palazzo Dionisi houses a permanent exhibition on mountaineering with photographic documentation of the activities of the Aquilotti del Gran Sasso, Italy's first climbers' club. This means that a stay in the municipality can offer specific destinations even when not all travellers choose the same sporting activity.

Historic centre and festivals

The historic centre of Pietracamela is characterised by narrow streets, buildings made of fieldstones and stones, and small balconies and terraces with viewpoints. Pietracamela has been known by the name “Petra” since 1324. The old Church of San Rocco has the year 1530 above its portal. The year 1432 is carved above the portal of the old parish church of San Giovanni; the Chiesa di San Giovanni also houses a permanent exhibition by Guido Montauti.

Several festivals give the local calendar a religious and local focus. The Feast of the Madonnina takes place in Arapietra on the first Sunday in August. The San Leucio patronal festival includes a procession through the village streets on 11 July. The Feast of San Rocco is celebrated on 16 August with a procession and folkloric events.
