Aielli between Gorge, Street Art and History

Nature, culture and astronomy shape Aielli’s diverse offerings. The town combines an impressive natural area with historic churches, medieval traces and an unusual open-air museum. This makes it possible to bring different interests together within a single trip, without every shared activity having to follow the same pace or suit the same preferences.

A Nature Experience at the Gole di Aielli-Celano

The entrance to the Gole di Aielli-Celano on Aielli’s side leads into a 4.5-kilometre-long section of gorge. When planning a day in nature, this fixed route length is a useful point of reference: it does not describe a short viewpoint, but a longer stretch for which you should allow sufficient time. If you are travelling in a group with different interests, you can therefore treat the gorge as a separate item on your itinerary and consider the cultural offerings in the town separately.

Access to the Gole di Aielli-Celano is limited from 24 May to 31 October through free online booking. Reservations are valid either in the direction from La Foce to Val d'Arano or from Val d'Arano to La Foce, with a maximum of 80 people per day in each case. If you would like to include this natural area in your stay, choosing the direction is just as much a part of the planning as taking this period into account.

Gorge Walls, Stream and Mountain Area

The Gole di Aielli-Celano were formed by the thousands of years of erosion caused by the La Foce stream. Its gorge walls reach heights of several hundred metres and thus shape the character of this natural area. The formation through water erosion also makes the gorge interesting for visitors who want to understand a landscape not only through movement, but also through its geological development. Part of Aielli’s mountain area also lies within the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino.

Churches and Medieval Traces

Aielli’s history includes the parish church Chiesa della Santissima Trinità. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and was built at the request of Count Antonio Piccolomini di Celano between 1477 and 1479. This precise dating places the building within a clearly defined period and makes it a specific point of interest for visitors who would like to discover historic architecture during their stay.

Another destination is the Chiesa di San Rocco. It was built in 1546 as a burial church and dedicated to Saint Rocco, who was revered as the patron saint against the plague. The church preserves a 16th-century fresco of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.

The Porta Montanara also points to the town’s medieval development. It was part of the walled complex that connected Aielli’s medieval Burgo with the Castello located on the summit. This context explains the building’s function within the settlement structure of the time: the Porta Montanara did not stand in isolation, but belonged to a fortified link between the Burgo and the castle complex higher up.

Borgo Universo: Street Art and Astronomy in the Town

Borgo Universo began in 2017 as a festival of street art and astronomy. Today, it comprises an open-air museum spread across Aielli’s streets, squares and public spaces, with more than 50 works. These include murals, sculptures and installations. As a result, art does not encounter you only in a single exhibition building, but in various places throughout the town. This also changes the way you explore Aielli: routes through streets and squares become connected with works created in different artistic forms.

Anyone who does not want to interpret the murals alone can take the Tour dei Murales. This is a guided tour through Aielli’s open-air museum with local guides from the Cooperativa di Comunità La Maesa. The tour therefore offers its own way of accessing the town’s artistic focus and complements individual exploration of the streets, squares and public spaces. This can be helpful for a travel group if not everyone wants the same level of depth when viewing the works or if a shared activity is being sought.

Torre delle Stelle and a Scale Model of the Solar System

At the Torre delle Stelle, there is a trail set within nature that represents the solar system at a scale of one to one billion. This astronomical display combines a natural setting with a clear scientific theme. Visits to the Torre delle Stelle can be reserved by consulting the events calendar and then sending an enquiry via WhatsApp. This gives the activity a different character from the open-air museum spread throughout the town: here, the astronomical scale and a specially designed trail are the focus.

Aielli for Different Travel Interests

Aielli can therefore be incorporated into a stay in several ways. The Gole di Aielli-Celano appeal to visitors who want to experience a longer stretch of gorge and striking rock walls. The mountain area and the part within the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino complement this focus on nature. Churches, the Porta Montanara and Borgo Universo, on the other hand, are aimed at travellers who want to combine architectural history, religious art, medieval settlement structures or contemporary art.
