Németbánya: Folk Traditions and Village Architecture
Accommodation in Németbánya
Németbánya combines a permanent folk exhibition, characteristic village architecture from several building periods, and Magyar forrás as a major excursion destination.
Folk Traditions and Building History in Németbánya
The Faluház features a permanent folk exhibition of historical costumes and household objects. The exhibits provide a clear cultural focus; the architecture of the German-speaking village offers another perspective. It includes characteristic buildings from the period of the glassworks established in the 18th century and from later building periods. The architectural history therefore extends beyond a single period of construction. Magyar forrás is a major excursion destination for visitors to Németbánya.
Winter and Landscape in the Wider Balaton North Destination
In the wider Balaton North destination, the ski system at SkiArena Vibe Park in Eplény comprises 16 pistes with a total length of 7,984 metres. The number of pistes and their total length are two different measures of the system. If you are planning a day of skiing, it is advisable to check current operating information. The Ámos-hegyi lookout point at SkiArena Vibe Park also offers views of the landscape of the high Bakony.
Hegyestű is another distinct landscape feature in the wider Balaton North destination: the 337-metre-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló and reveals the interior of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago. At the lookout point on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. Here, geological formations, views of the surrounding hills and rock samples can be appreciated as different aspects of the landscape.
Badacsony offers hikers trails and panoramic views. Its geological formations include structures known as basalt organ pipes. Special grape varieties are grown on the slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. Hiking, geology and viticulture are three distinct themes, each with its own place in the wider Balaton North destination.
Culture and Visitor Attractions in the Wider Balaton North Destination
The Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers boat trips and the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). It is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres to date. The boat trips and exhibition describe specific visitor experiences; the kilometre figure refers to the explored length of the system, not the duration of a boat trip.
In Herend, the Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre at the Herend Porcelain Manufactory also presents porcelain production, the associated techniques and the traditions of applied art. Workshops at the Minimanufactory offer a hands-on experience: visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The exhibitions, interpretation and workshop each offer a different focus on porcelain.
At Veszprém Zoo, the Dinosaur Park features lifelike models of dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago; children can take part in a real archaeological excavation there. The African Savannah Playground has ropeways, climbing frames, bouncy castles and a safari-striped aeroplane. The zoo offers experiences across six continents all year round and welcomes visitors of all ages.
