Tobogganing on Várhegy: planning a winter visit
Tobogganing is possible on the northern slope of Várhegy in Döbrönte, but the former ski slope served by a lift is no longer operating. Tobogganing and downhill skiing are therefore different activities. If you choose accommodation based on lift and slope facilities, do not mistake the local tobogganing option for an operating ski slope. This makes it easy to define the focus of your trip: sledding in Döbrönte or skiing on slopes in a designated ski resort.

Szarvaskő Castle: construction dates and surviving sections
Himfy Benedek had the first buildings of Szarvaskő Castle constructed between 1367 and 1374. This date range applies to the first buildings and should not be confused with the extent of what remains today. Only the rondels and part of the inner tower have survived. The construction period and the surviving structure are therefore two different aspects of the castle: the former describes when construction began, while the latter identifies what is still standing. The castle is on the ridge above the village, connecting its history with the village’s topography.
Getting to the castle
A path from the playground in Döbrönte leads to the castle, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the main road through the village. These two starting points will help you find your way to the castle. It is described as open to visitors free of charge all year round. Check local conditions before your visit.
Castle festival and bus routes
The castle festival takes place every year on the last Sunday in September. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date in advance. Bus routes 7926 (Pápa–Ganna–Döbrönte) and 7927 (Pápa–Döbrönte–Farkasgyepű) serve the village. Routes and timetables may change, so it is a good idea to check the current timetable before travelling. If you are travelling for a specific event, the date and the bus connection are separate planning considerations: the recurring festival date does not replace checking which bus service is suitable. Likewise, the fact that a route serves the village does not by itself tell you which service fits your plans.
