Mosbach – Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Mosbach
The village is home to the Rennsteig circular hiking trail and the Mosbacher Linden Tree, a natural monument; the dance groups of the Mosbach local history association are also part of its cultural life. More museums, monuments and leisure destinations can be found in the wider Wutha-Farnroda destination. Planning with this in mind helps you distinguish between attractions in Mosbach and additional regional destinations.
Hiking and Nature in Mosbach
The Rennsteig circular hiking trail is about 11 kilometres long and has around 220 metres of elevation gain. Along the way, it offers views of the Hörselberge, Inselsberg, Drachenstein and Wartburg. The distance and elevation gain provide two different ways to gauge the scale of the hike; the named viewpoints add a connection to the surrounding landscape.
Another natural attraction is the Mosbacher Linden Tree. This natural monument stands at a fork in the road where WeinstraĂźe and Marktweg meet, between Eisenach and Mosbach. The site is home to a stand of trees about 250 years old. Together, these two Mosbach attractions offer different experiences: the circular hiking trail is a longer walk with named viewpoints, while the linden tree is a specific place with old trees.
Village Life and Culture
The children’s and youth dance group of the Mosbach local history association (Heimatverein Mosbach e.V.) and its adult dance group learn Thüringen folk dances and perform them at various festivities. Dance and festivities are therefore part of the local cultural scene. This describes the groups’ ongoing activities, not a specific event date.
More Destinations in the Wider Wutha-Farnroda Destination
The Hörselberg Museum is located in Schönau, within the wider Wutha-Farnroda destination. It is housed in a listed complex comprising a church, an old schoolhouse, a rectory with parsonage, a stable, a barn, a washhouse and a bakehouse, right at the foot of the Hörselberge. Exhibits include unique fossil finds as well as the geology and formation of the Hörselberge. Another exhibition is dedicated to the region’s baking tradition: on display are old baking machines, a variety of kitchen utensils and a “baker’s shop as it was in Grandma’s day”.
In Wutha, the “Rühler Bimmel” open-air exhibition documents the former route of the Ruhla railway, including its stations, stops and industrial sidings. The exhibition includes an original section of track that survived the dismantling work after the railway line was closed. Schönau is also home to the old Hörsel Mill, right on the Hörsel. It is a sawmill and the only one of the village’s three mills that is still operating.
Farnroda Castle Park combines a pond with the adjoining festival grounds in the middle of the village; the grounds provide space for recreation and events. The park is also home to the remaining tower of the former moated castle, which dates back to the 12th century. Another historic site is the Hellwig Memorial. It commemorates Lieutenant Friedrich Hellwig’s liberation of about 4,000 Prussian prisoners of war at Eichrodt on 17 October 1806.
Regional Planning
The municipality of Wutha-Farnroda borders the Rennsteig in the Mosbach district. For train travel within the wider destination, regional trains between Eisenach, Gotha and Erfurt stop in Wutha and Schönau. Check current schedules for your trip. Another leisure destination is the Mosbach forest swimming pool, a modern outdoor pool with stainless steel pools and solar-heated water. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the season dates and opening hours in advance.
