Parks and countryside

The Historic Spa Park in Bad Liebenstein was laid out in 1799. Together with the adjoining Burgberg, it covers almost 30 hectares. Altenstein Palace and its 160-hectare landscaped park are also part of Bad Liebenstein. The palace park was designed with contributions from the garden designers Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau, Eduard Petzold and Peter Joseph Lenné. Those interested in landscaped parks will find two distinct historical connections here: the spa park with its Burgberg and the landscaped park at Altenstein Palace.

Individual buildings also offer a reason to turn your attention to the history of the town. The Wandelhalle in Bad Liebenstein was built in the Neoclassical style in 1913. It represents a different historical facet from the park, which was laid out in 1799. These differences can help you plan your visit around your personal interests, without combining all the sites into a single walking tour.

Theater and historic sites

The Comödienhaus Bad Liebenstein is one of the oldest theater buildings in Thuringia. It was built in 1800 at the instigation of Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen. Since opening, it has been a venue for theater, including comedies, operettas, operas and other performances. If you are interested in theater history, you can plan to visit the building as a cultural highlight in its own right; its historical significance alone does not indicate what is currently on the program.

The ruins of Bad Liebenstein Castle stand on a 460-meter-high hill above the town. A hiking trail leads from the Bad Liebenstein Kurhaus up to the Burgberg by the ruins in about 25 minutes. When planning your day, allow around 25 minutes of walking time for the ascent from the Kurhaus to the Burgberg.

Tours and other places to visit

The Kultur-NaTour is a moderately difficult, 11.0-kilometer circular tour. The stated elevation gain and loss are each 225 meters, and the tour takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The start and finish are at the Bad Liebenstein Tourist Information Office. The route passes Altenstein Palace and descends to the Luisenthal Waterfall. Its distance, elevation changes and approximate duration make it easier to factor into your day’s plans than an outing without set route details. The three terrain therapy trails in Bad Liebenstein offer another way to enjoy healthy exercise in nature.

The Historic Spa Park has a Kneipp facility and a barefoot trail. They offer a different focus from a longer hike. The Bad Liebenstein Wildlife Park covers 5 hectares and is home to around 60 animal species and around 300 animals. There is a playground for children. The Altenstein Cave, Thuringia’s oldest show cave, is located in the municipality. Its described features include a cave dome, an underground lake, a stream, light and sound installations, and a 3D model of the cave. It is also a habitat for several protected bat species. A visit therefore combines an interest in cave formations with an opportunity to learn about a protected habitat.

A tradition that takes place every year in the municipality is the torch burning on Antoniusberg in Schweina. It is held on December 24 and attracts many visitors on Christmas Eve.
