At its core, Eisfeld Castle is a medieval castle complex and now houses the town museum. A notable exhibit is the stone-marble mill from Truckenthal. The mill dates from 1867 and will be on display again in the permanent exhibition from 2024. The Otto Ludwig memorial site offers a different focus: it is located in the Ludwig family’s summer house, built in 1814, and houses collections on the poet and musician’s life and work. Otto Ludwig was born in Eisfeld in 1813.

Architectural history and a traditional festival

Individual buildings also provide concrete historical reference points. Built in 1575 and later expanded, the school building in Eisfeld is considered the second-oldest school building in Thuringia. Above the town hall’s round entrance portal is a coat-of-arms relief carved from sandstone in 1557. The traditional Eisfeld Cowtail Festival includes a morning wake-up call, a historic guard parade with a fire brigade exercise, the commander’s ride and the festival procession. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg explores the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is arranged as a tour through the entire fortress and shows how castle construction changed from one era to the next.

Hiking routes and winter sports are also tied to specific locations across the district. The approximately 7 km Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) in the municipality of Straufhain passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated; information boards at the former mill sites describe the facilities. In the district, the Werratal Cycle Route runs through the Werra floodplains and is particularly popular for downstream cycling tours. The Werra Valley is also suitable for hiking and cycling; from Themar downstream, water-based excursions are possible too.

For winter sports, the municipality of Masserberg is another distinct destination in the Hildburghausen district: winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country ski trails totaling over 70 km, as well as numerous ski touring routes.
