Finsterbergen is a forest health resort surrounded by extensive spruce and beech forests. The town has an extensive network of hiking trails and certified terrain therapy trails, which can be explored either with a guide or independently. Finsterbergen also offers ideal conditions for hiking and mountain biking.
Geographical Location
Finsterbergen is located in the Thuringian Forest and extends across elevations ranging from 419 to 710 meters above sea level. The Rennsteig is considered to be 4 km away. The town has no through road and is also considered conveniently located.
The area surrounding Finsterbergen includes Tenneberg Castle, Mittlerer Höhenberg, the Ohrdruf forced labor camp, Vorderer Höhenberg, Großer Inselsberg, Hallenberg, and Oberlautenberg. Altenstein Castle is located in the wider surrounding region.
Culture and History
The Finsterbergen Local History Museum is housed in a restored coach house dating from the 18th century. It documents Finsterbergen’s earlier history as a monastery village, coach village, and dollmaking village, and presents local traditional costumes, embroideries, musical instruments, and a dollmaker’s workshop.
Martin Andersen-Nexø stayed in Finsterbergen in the summer of 1905 and in February 1911; a commemorative plaque marks his former accommodation.
