Nature and Landscape

In 1942, 57 hectares of the Weißenhäuser Brök were designated as a nature reserve. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network as an FFH site and bird sanctuary. Its near-natural dry dune grasslands and heathlands support rare plant and animal species. The visitor paths crossing the Weißenhäuser Brök between the holiday center and the beach areas are fenced off from the adjacent sensitive dunes.

The village of Wangels is located near the Bungsberg protected landscape area, a hilly landscape formed during the last Ice Age. Hiking and cycling paths near Wangels lead through fields and forests and along small waterways. A small alder swamp near Wangels is an alder swamp forest in the Bungsberg protected landscape area; it is characterized by permanently wet, partly flooded conditions.

The Farver Mill was built in 1828 as a three-story Dutch smock mill and can be rented as holiday accommodation. The Oldenburger Graben is associated with its use as a waterway by Slavic communities more than 1,200 years ago.

Getting There

A published driving route from Hamburg to Wangels follows the A1 toward Lübeck, exits at junction 17-Neustadt-Nord, and then continues on the B501 toward Neustadt. Wangels can also be reached by regional bus services; a transfer in Oldenburg in Holstein is possible.
