Zaulsdorf has been documented since 1328. The former name Zcaulastorf probably derives from an Old Sorbian personal name. The village belongs to a group of seven settlements east of Oelsnitz that emerged during the early phase of land clearance in the Vogtland region.

Landscape

Mühlental is rural and agricultural in character. Continuous forest areas, biotopes and bodies of water define the natural landscape; the banks of the bodies of water are also part of the natural and recreational landscape.
