Sehma – Trails, Ridges and Ore Mountain Craft Traditions

Sehma lies at an elevation of around 600 m above sea level between the table mountains of Bärenstein (898 m) to the east, Scheibenberg (807 m) to the west and Pöhlberg (832 m) to the north. This location gives the village a distinctive landscape: ridges, meadows and forests define the surrounding area, while several signposted paths connect the different parts of the village.

Trails through Ridges and Forests

Sehmatal has a well-developed and signposted network for hiking, cycling tours and ski hikes. Trails connect the municipality with Oberwiesenthal and Annaberg. The Kammweg quality hiking trail also continues from the Eastern Ore Mountains into the Vogtland. Circular routes lead through the meadows and forests around the different parts of the village.

A specific point of orientation is the Sehmaer Höhe between Walthersdorf and Sehma. It is a starting point for hikes, walks and cycling tours; existing cycling and hiking trails provide access to tourist destinations in the region.

The Firstenweg in Two Directions

From Sehma, you can hike south along the Firstenweg to the Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal. In a northerly direction, the Firstenweg leads from Sehma to the Frohnauer Hammer.

The hike from Sehma to the Firstenweg follows part of the continuously signposted Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike route as far as the Firstenweg.

By Erzgebirgsbahn to the Forsthaus

The hiking route from Sehma to the Forsthaus in Buchholz Forest can be reached by Erzgebirgsbahn train to Sehma station.

Crafts and Churches in the Village

Sehma preserves Ore Mountain craft traditions such as bobbin lace making and wood carving. These traditions are still maintained in clubs today and passed on to younger generations.

St. Paul’s Church contains rare Art Nouveau paintings. Its interior is typical of an Art Nouveau church, and it was built in 1898/99.

Christ Church was built and consecrated on 12 February 1922. It is a functional building with some Art Nouveau influences.

The Cranzahl Drinking-Water Reservoir

The Cranzahl drinking-water reservoir is located in the vicinity of Sehma. Access to the shore, swimming and boating are not permitted there. A circular trail leads around the reservoir.
