Chemnitz can be explored in a variety of ways: on foot along a circular route through the city, with a visit to museums and exhibitions, or by cycling along the Chemnitz River. Exploring the city on foot
The PURPLE PATH circular route through Chemnitz is 8.64 kilometers long and is described as an easy circular hiking trail. Anyone who wants to explore the city on foot can use this route as a guide. The PURPLE PATH circular route starts at Chemnitz’s market square and passes St. Jakobi Church, the Town Hall, the Red Tower, the Karl Marx Monument and Theaterplatz. This offers an opportunity to include several notable landmarks in a city walk.
You can take guided city tours with a guide or explore on your own. This gives you a choice between a guided experience and a self-planned walk. The PURPLE PATH broadens the perspective beyond individual stops: As an open-air exhibition of contemporary art, it features works by more than 60 artists. The permanent route connects Chemnitz with its cultural region through public art.
Museums and architecture
The Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology, or smac for short, is housed in the Schocken department store building. The listed building was constructed according to plans by Erich Mendelsohn and opened as the Schocken department store on May 15, 1930. At the museum, you can explore human history from the Stone Age to the early industrial age: more than 6,000 exhibits are displayed across three floors.
The Chemnitz Art Collections preserve around 70,000 objects dating from the 4th to the 21st century. The collection also includes more than 200 sculptures by French and German sculptors. Those interested in architecture and design can visit Villa Esche. Henry van de Velde designed it in 1903 for the family of a Chemnitz textile manufacturer; it is considered a building of European significance. The villa houses Germany’s first Henry van de Velde Museum, as well as a permanent exhibition about his work.
Kaßberg also offers a distinctive architectural focus: It is one of Europe’s largest contiguous historicist and Art Nouveau districts. The Chemnitz Industrial Museum explores significant developments across three centuries of industrial history. It houses a single-cylinder counter-pressure steam engine from 1896, which is demonstrated on selected days.
Garden, stage and miniature railway
The Chemnitz Botanical Garden covers 12 hectares and brings together the Botanical Garden, the School Biology Center and the Nature Conservation Center. If you are looking for a green focus for your stay, you can include this place in your excursion plans. The three institutions give the garden distinct connections to botany, school biology and nature conservation.
Since 1954, the Chemnitz Park Railway has run along a 2.3-kilometer circular route through Küchwald Park as a 600-millimeter narrow-gauge railway. Its route and gauge make it a distinctive attraction for visitors interested in a ride on a historic narrow-gauge railway. The Küchwaldbühne offers a different kind of visit: This open-air theater, designed as an amphitheater, is located in the woods; every season, Küchwaldbühne e.V. stages its own children’s plays there.
Cycling route and other excursion destinations
For a cycling trip, the Chemnitztal Cycle Route runs from Chemnitz city center into the Chemnitz Valley and follows the Chemnitz River for about 24 kilometers to Diethensdorf. The approximate route length and named endpoint offer concrete points of reference for planning an excursion. If you would rather plan an outdoor art visit or a museum trip than a cycling route, Chemnitz offers a variety of options for that, too.
Klaffenbach Water Castle is surrounded by a moat and set in parkland with an adjoining castle courtyard. It hosts changing exhibitions, concerts and artists’ studios. This makes it different from the city museums and the circular routes mentioned above: It combines a castle and park setting with a changing program of cultural events.
