Culture and Town History
The Catholic parish and pilgrimage Church of St. Wendelin is a late Gothic hall church; construction began in the mid-14th century. The permanent exhibition at the St. Wendel Museum presents works and objects relating to regional art and cultural history. The classic guided tour of the old town takes you within the former historic ring of the town walls. For a different perspective, the “Through the Town by Lantern Light” tour is led by a night watchman through the old town. Depending on your interests, you can explore architectural history, regional art and culture, or the historic layout of the town.
Sculpture Trail and Cycling Routes
The Sculpture Trail combines outdoor art with the opportunity to set out on foot or by bicycle. It stretches for 25 kilometres and includes 58 large stone blocks. You can plan a walk or cycle along the route as a focus of your stay. St. Wendel also has a 200-kilometre cycling network with well-maintained, signposted routes. It caters to families, recreational cyclists and ambitious athletes. If you are planning a bike ride, you can choose from this range of routes; the Sculpture Trail also offers a specific connection to art along its route.
In the wider region, the Sankt Wendeler Land Railway Cycle Path also runs for 30 kilometres from Freisen to Nonnweiler. It is another named destination for a cycling trip. Historic and Nature-Focused Destinations in the Region
The wider region also offers a variety of historic points of interest. The Otzenhausen Celtic Ring Wall was built in the 1st century BC. St. Mauritius Abbey in Tholey is considered one of the oldest monastery foundations on German soil. If you would like to include regional history in your stay, you can choose between two distinct topics: the ring wall and the long monastic tradition for which Tholey is known.
For a different kind of excursion, visit the Freisen Nature Wildlife Park. A 1.8-kilometre circular path runs through an area where most of the animals roam freely. The circular route and the breeding programme for the northern bald ibis offer different points of interest: you can see the animals along the path and learn about a particularly endangered bird species.
Bostalsee and Regional Specialities
Bostalsee is the largest recreational lake in southwestern Germany. Activities available there include sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. There are also two lidos where you can swim in summer. If you wish, you can add water sports or a day at the beach to your plans for a stay in the region.
A place to sample local food in St. Wendel is the farmers’, craftspeople’s and vintners’ market. It offers regional specialities and selected wines.
