Merzig-Wadern offers opportunities for a stay that combines Roman history, industrial heritage and time outdoors. When choosing your accommodation, it is worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on during your trip: in Merzig, trails and garden spaces take centre stage, while other experiences can be found at named locations such as Perl-Borg, Beckingen and DĂĽppenweiler. The activities vary in character, from guided tours and technical demonstrations to walking and cycling routes.

History and technology at different locations

The reconstructed Roman Villa Borg in Perl-Borg is a Roman villa rustica with archaeological treasures. Guided tours are offered in German, French, English, Dutch and Luxembourgish. If you are interested in Roman history and archaeological finds, the villa offers a clear thematic focus. The languages available for guided tours also give you a practical point of reference when planning your visit.

You can explore the history of technology in a different way at the Fellenberg Mill. The precision engineering workshop, dating from 1927, is still operational: machines are still powered by water and demonstrated there today. At the Historic Copper Mine in Düppenweiler, the focus is on an underground tour featuring the “Mystallica” audiovisual multimedia system. This lets you choose according to your interests between a Roman villa, a workshop with machinery demonstrations and an underground tour.

Gardens and outdoor activities

The Garden of the Senses in Merzig comprises eleven themed garden areas and a children's play garden. Beckingen's Saar Garden offers a sculpture park with a boat landing, a playground and a football golf course. The two locations have different features: themed garden areas at one, sculptures and other leisure activities at the other. If you would like to take different interests into account when planning your trip, you can factor in these differences when making your choice.

Events are held regularly at the Garden of the Senses. These include the Rose Days in June, featuring a rose and garden market and expert advice. The Viez Festival is also held in Merzig every year on the first Saturday in October. If your stay falls during one of these periods, you can take the relevant dates into account as an additional factor in your planning.

Getting around on foot or by bike

Merzig has a total of 300 kilometres of excellent, clearly signposted walking and hiking trails. Cyclists can use well-developed cycle paths on both sides of the Saar in Merzig. This gives you the choice of walking and hiking on the one hand, or cycling on the other, for time outdoors. The stated distance and quality information applies to the trails in Merzig; it does not indicate the length or difficulty of individual routes.

Nearby, a 1,250-metre-long, low-barrier treetop path runs through the forest above the Cloef. It leads to a 42-metre-high observation tower with panoramic views of the Saarschleife and the surrounding landscape. The path's length, surface and destination give you practical points of reference if you are considering this excursion.
