Culture
The Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius is considered one of the oldest monastic foundations on German soil. Its Gothic church has 37 newly designed windows, including works by Mahbuba Maqsoodi and Gerhard Richter. The complex also includes a formally designed garden, Baroque architectural elements, and historic furnishings.
Landscape
The viewing platform of the Schaumberg Tower is 37.5 meters above the ground and offers a 360-degree panorama over Saarland and beyond. An internal elevator leads to the viewing platform, which is considered fully accessible.
Trails
The Herzweg trail leads around Schaumberg and includes features such as a panoramic frame, a wellness bench, and places of power. The trail is 2.8 kilometers long, paved, has gentle inclines, and provides barrier-free access.
The Mauritius Circular Trail connects St. Mauritius Abbey, the market square, the Theulegium Museum, and Schaumberg.
For cycling tours, the Schaumberg Cycle Route is a challenging 40-kilometer loop. It starts in Tholey and leads via Marpingen and St. Wendel to the Johann Adams Mill in Theley.
History
At the foot of Schaumberg lies the Vicus Wareswald between Marpingen, Oberthal, and Tholey. The Wareswald archaeological site can be visited year-round; visitors can participate in excavations there as volunteers.
Museums and Crafts
The Johann Adams Mill in Theley is an intact historic watermill and houses the District Mill Museum. During bread-baking courses, the tradition of baking fresh bread is demonstrated in the old stone oven.
The Haus am Mühlenpfad Local History Museum in Neipel documents the village history of the Schaumberger Land, particularly in the Bohnental valley. It presents changing exhibitions, concerts, and regular theater performances.
