Nature

The Bacher Lay in Nisterau is a nature reserve covering approximately 45 hectares. A natural stream and a small lake are part of this area, as are standing and flowing waters, shallow and steep banks, dry grasslands, tall-herb vegetation, and basalt cliffs, all located in close proximity to one another. The nature reserve provides a habitat for amphibians, reptiles, numerous bird species, and several orchid species and is freely accessible at all times.

The former Bacher Lay quarry includes an almost vertical basalt wall that can develop into an ice wall during severe winters.

Trails

Hiking and cycling routes run through and around Nisterau. The nature reserve offers opportunities to encounter characteristic flora and fauna. Near Bad Marienberg, the M4 circular route is 7.3 kilometers long. In addition, an organization in Bad Marienberg offers three developed cycling loops with varying levels of difficulty.

Culture and History

For centuries, Nisterau's history has been linked to the mining of lignite and basalt. The Wilhelmszeche underground mine closed in 1926; at times, more than 600 miners were employed there. The Bacher Lay basalt quarry is associated with the Pfaffenmal natural monument.

Events

The annual Backesfest also welcomes guests from outside the town. Another established local event is a riding and show-jumping tournament.
