Hiking along the Große Nister
The Kroppacher Schweiz-Limbach Circuit “Große Nister Valley” is a moderately difficult 15.8-kilometre hike. It covers 231 metres of elevation gain and is listed with a duration of 4.6 hours.
The hike leads through deciduous forests into the Große Nister valley. It then climbs to the Hartenberg to another viewpoint and follows the return route via Lützelauer Mill and the Heunigshöhlen Trail.
After reaching Astert, the 15.8-kilometre hike follows the Große Nister to just before Heuzert.
Cycle paths and ridges
The Nister Cycle Path is part of the Westerwald Loop. This route leads from Wissen through the Kroppach Switzerland to Hachenburg and onwards towards the Hoher Westerwald.
Along its route, the Nister Cycle Path crosses the Kroppach Switzerland. Steep banks and a rocky landscape there make for climbs from the valley to the surrounding heights.
The WW1 Cycle Route runs south from Limbach to Astert and circles the Hohe Ley viewpoint.
The WW1 Fuchskaute–Hachenburg Cycle Route, classified as moderately difficult, is 50 kilometres long.
Historic stops along the way
The route’s stops include the medieval Assberg roofing slate mine.
The route also passes Marienstatt Abbey, whose basilica is early Gothic.
Route access and local amenities
Bus route 270 runs from Hachenburg to Streithausen. From there, an approximately 25-minute walk leads to Limbach, where the route starts.
Access to the route from Hachenburg follows the K19 through Müschenbach to Astert and then continues via the K20 to Limbach.
Astert has a barbecue hut and a youth camping site.
