Nature and landscape

The landscape around Wallersheim, Büdesheim and Schwirzheim forms part of the largest limestone basin in the Eifel and is rich in fossils. Finds of crinoids, brachiopods, corals, snails and cephalopods have been documented in the Wallersheim/Loch area.

Well-marked hiking and cycling trails run around Wallersheim, passing dolomite rock formations and forest streams. Five rest areas with covered seating are available for hikers in this area.

Hiking

The Prümer Land Tour Route 3 is a moderately difficult 25-kilometre hike with 344 metres of ascent and descent. It passes Devonian rock strata and calcareous grasslands and offers panoramic views. An extension of the route through Loch includes the Walbert Felsenmeer, which is regarded as a geological feature.

Geographical setting

The L10 and L30 state roads run through Wallersheim. The L10 connects Hersdorf with Büdesheim and continues to the B410. The L30 runs from Birresborn-Kopp via Fleringen to the B410 in the direction of Prüm.

Culture and history

The Church of St Nicholas and St Barbara in Wallersheim was built between 1850 and 1860. It stands on elevated ground at the edge of the village, at the foot of a slope, and is a single-nave building in Romanesque forms. Its west tower ends in an octagonal pyramid roof; the polygonal choir has windows framed in sandstone, and the church also features coloured ornamental windows. Wallersheim's parish church of St Nicholas is a hall church influenced by Classicism, with historicist motifs. The church regularly serves as a venue for the Wallersheim Passion Plays.

Next to the mortuary stands a Baroque crucifixion shrine with a relief depicting Saint Hubertus, dated 1736. The Langstein is a limestone menhir that probably dates from the Late Neolithic. Within the municipality, in the Wallersheim Forest southeast of Loch, there is a wayside cross with a relief of Saint Peter, dated 1726. The wayside cross Am Lee is a post-Gothic niche cross bearing the year 1680, with later additions. The former school with teachers' apartments in Wallersheim is a cultural monument dating from 1902.

Weißenseifen

In Weißenseifen, the Galerie am Pi is used for drawing classes and concerts during four summer weeks. It also hosts changing exhibitions featuring works by Albrecht Klauer-Simonis. The grounds of the Weißenseifen artists' settlement are freely accessible. Every year, the artists' settlement stages the exhibition Road Salt for Advent on the first weekend of Advent.
