Cross-country skiing and trails at the Rhein-Weser-Turm

At the historic Rhein-Weser-Turm on Westerberg in the Rothaargebirge, you’ll find a 24-metre-high observation tower with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Rothaarloipe’s designated starting point is a helpful landmark when planning a day of cross-country skiing. The ski school and ski rental are also located at the cross-country skiing centre. Cross-country skiing is the main focus here.

The tower is also a useful landmark for hiking: a stage of the Rothaarsteig runs from there to Ginsberger Heide. The route is 14.4 km long and passes Dreiherrnstein and the source of the Ferndorf. If you’d prefer to plan a circular walk, the Rothaarsteig-Spur Oberhundemer Bergtour is another option. This signposted premium circular trail starts and ends at the Haus des Gastes hiking portal in Oberhundem’s spa park. It leads through forests, past rugged cliffs and to panoramic viewpoints at Kahleberg.

Discover nature and landscapes

The Schwarzbachsystem mit Haberg und Krenkeltal nature reserve is located in the municipality of Kirchhundem in the district of Olpe. It covers 312 hectares and consists of six separate areas. Its defining feature is a largely natural, extensive and highly branched stream system formed by the Schwarzbach, Meinscheidbach and their tributaries. This gives the area its own nature-focused appeal alongside the hiking trails described above.

On various circular hiking routes of 5 to 10 km, audio tours bring cultural history along the former border between the Sauerland, Siegerland and Wittgensteiner Land to life through anecdotes and stories. If you’re interested in regional history as well as hiking, you can include these routes in your travel plans as a separate option. The disused railway tunnel between Krenkeltal and Schwarzbachtal is also an important winter roost for bats.
