Altena Castle and its history
The world’s first youth hostel opened at Altena Castle in 1914. For those who want to experience Altena on the water, the Altenaer-Canu-Verein e.V. offers a seasonal activity: from May to October, “After-Work-Paddling” takes place on the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. The club also offers taster courses for beginners and advanced paddlers. Luisenhütte is an interactive museum that vividly shows how iron was produced there and further processed into cast products. At Felsenmeer Hemer, the rock formations were shaped over centuries by wind, water, and human activity; the site is also home to one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. These places are part of the wider Märkischer Kreis travel destination and should not be confused with attractions in Altena.
Felsenmeer can only be visited via designated paths; the Panorama Trail leads to the viewpoints. This makes the excursion a good choice if you are looking for a route with scenic viewpoints.
