Märkischer Kreis: Culture, Landscape and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Märkischer Kreis
Märkischer Kreis offers plenty to explore during a stay focused on cultural history and landscape. Visitors planning their excursions can choose from museums with different areas of focus, archaeological history, rock formations, and hiking and cycling trails. A ride on a historic museum railway is another of the experiences described here. This makes it easy to tailor your choices to your own interests without combining culture and nature into a single sightseeing itinerary.

Cultural History and Museums
Altena Castle is a monument of national importance. It was the site of the world’s first and therefore oldest permanent youth hostel. This unique history sets the castle apart as a cultural attraction from the museums focusing on the district’s technical and industrial history. Anyone interested in the history of travel and youth hostels will find a tangible historical connection here;
The German Wire Museum explores how wire was made in the past and how it is made today. As an interactive experience museum, it combines the history of technology with social, economic and cultural history. Hands-on stations invite visitors to take part. This makes the museum a place to discover technological development not only through its equipment, but also through its social and economic context. This gives it a different focus from Altena Castle when choosing a cultural destination.
Balve Cave also offers an archaeological perspective on the region’s history. Based on its finds, it is one of Europe’s most important sites for cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic. Visitors with a particular interest in early human history and archaeological finds can take this focus into account when planning their stay.
Rocky Landscapes and Trails
The gorges of the Hönne Valley are among the nature reserves described as representative of the limestone areas in the northern part of Märkischer Kreis. The Felsenmeer rock formation in Hemer is another landscape attraction, with rock formations shaped over centuries by wind, water and human influence. It is also home to one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. Landscape features and the history of raw materials come together here in a single area.
There is a clear guideline for visiting the Felsenmeer: it may only be explored via designated trails. The designated panoramic trail leads to the viewpoints. Another way to experience the landscape is by bike: the Märkische Cave Route follows the well-signposted “Radeln nach Zahlen” junction network and has several access points along the route. This can help you choose a suitable starting point for your ride.
Two long-distance trails that cross regional boundaries also run through Märkischer Kreis: the Sauerland Höhenflug and the Sauerland Waldroute. In the wider region, the new edition of the “Hiking in Märkisches Sauerland” booklet contains information on 44 hiking trails. The selection ranges from easy, family-friendly routes to challenging day trips. Hikers can choose based on their preferred level of difficulty; the trails and the booklet each cover their own area.
Historic Train Ride and Other Local Pages
On certain days, the Sauerland narrow-gauge railway takes passengers back and forth between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer in restored carriages. On operating days between May and October, the trains travel through the Elsetal landscape. Special steam or diesel trips can be booked outside the stated operating times. As the ride is only available on certain days, it is worth including it as a separate experience in your stay plans rather than assuming it is a regular service.
There is a geocaching multi-cache around the Luisenhütte. Visitors can borrow GPS devices at the Hüttenschänke and embark on a digital treasure hunt with a flyer. The Luisenhütte itself is a visitor-focused experience museum that vividly demonstrates how iron was made there and processed into cast products. The site thus showcases both historic iron processing and a complementary activity.
