In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails are available in Battenberg (Eder)’s district of Dodenau. This is a seasonal offering; check before your trip whether the trails are groomed for your dates. When looking for accommodation, you can compare this winter activity with other interests: nature along the Eder, historic buildings and viewpoints. Which of these you want to focus on during your stay is a useful starting point for planning your trip.

Nature between Dodenau and Battenberg

The Ederaue floodplain between Dodenau and Battenberg is extensive, partly protected as a nature reserve, and home to a wide variety of animal and plant species. Fishing is also possible on this stretch of the Eder; local conditions may vary. The Dodenau wildlife enclosure covers more than ten hectares. While Ederaue refers to the stretch of river between the two places, the wildlife enclosure is located in the district of Dodenau. This makes the landscape and the wildlife enclosure distinct nature-related themes to consider when planning your trip.

Neuburg, gardens and village history

Neuburg in Battenberg was built in 1732 by chief forester Karl Johann Philipp Löner von Laurenburg and served as Landgrave Ludwig VIII’s hunting lodge until 1768. The Baroque garden at Neuburg covers around 2,700 square metres and is laid out on several terraces. The terraces offer a tangible impression of the garden’s design; the dates place Neuburg’s former use in its historical context.

The local history museum in Laisa illustrates village life in the final quarter of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The focus is on the crafts practised in Laisa around the turn of the century. This offers a look at everyday life and work during a specific historical period. Laisa is a district of Battenberg.

Mine, tower and views

The Burgbergstollen visitor mine lies on the slope of Burgberg. It is a five-minute walk from Battenberg’s market square. The 150-year-old tunnels and shafts can be visited with an experienced mine guide, wearing protective clothing and using a miner’s lamp. As opening times may change, it is best to check in advance whether a tour is available on your dates.

Kellerburg can only be reached on foot; several hiking trails lead to Kellerburg Tower on Battenberg’s Burgberg. The observation platform is reached by climbing 88 steps. In good weather, the distant view extends as far as the Marburg Lahnberge, Kahler Asten and Hoher Lohr. Two different details are useful for planning: the walk from the market square to the visitor mine and the steps up to the Kellerburg Tower platform.

The Battenberg (Eder) hang-gliding site is a launch area for hang-gliders and paragliders, with views over the Eder valley. The historical walk through Battenberg is free of charge; donations are welcome. As fees may change, check the current information before your visit.

Planning bus connections and your stay

Regular bus services connect Battenberg with the railway stations in Frankenberg and MĂĽnchhausen, as well as with other municipalities. If you are travelling by bus or planning trips in the surrounding area, check the current timetable before your journey. Together with the specific walking routes on Burgberg and the seasonal cross-country skiing in Dodenau, these provide different points of reference for your stay, without assuming that a particular accommodation offers specific amenities.
