Rebgeshain at a Glance

Rebgeshain combines a long-standing local history with protected landscapes and a designated mountain biking route. The village originated between the 8th and 12th centuries. At the same time, the Rebgeshain district lies within the Hoher Vogelsberg FFH area. For your stay, this creates a clear link between historic village features and experiencing nature.

Bakehouse and Historic Farmsteads

A prominent testament to the village’s history is the bakehouse at Brunnenweg 2. Its core dates from 1830. It consists of a combination of solid basalt and brick construction with a shingled half-timbered structure. The bakery furnishings and an adjoining room where cakes could be sampled have also been preserved. The bakehouse is listed as a Hessian cultural monument. Its original significance for village life is also connected with its protection as a cultural monument.

Other historic buildings add to this village character. According to an inscription, a five-bay single farmstead was built in 1769 by Johannes Fink; the inscription describes him as the progenitor of the Fink family of master builders from Lauterbach. A six-bay linear farmstead has a residential section whose three eastern bays still date from the late 18th century. These building forms make it possible to observe different floor plans and construction periods within the village, without having to classify the buildings as a single uniform type.

Cemetery Complex and School History

The cemetery complex in Rebgeshain has a 19th-century enclosure built of basalt. A portal lined with linden trees forms part of this ensemble and is of cultural and historical interest. The complex also includes a memorial erected after the First World War for soldiers and fallen servicemen from the village. The cemetery hall was built in 1972 to a design by Walter Ruppel and features notable contemporary architecture.

The history of the school is also linked to specific dates. The schoolhouse in Rebgeshain dates from 1813. In 1910, the village had a one-class elementary school. The name of the village itself originated from the regional Hagen settlements. MTB Route 7 through the Vogelsberg Landscape

For active days, the 33.2-kilometre, moderately difficult MTB Route 7 Ulrichstein offers a clearly defined route connection to Rebgeshain. The route is designed as a loop through the Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Nature Park. It passes through the Breungeshainer Heide nature reserve and by the Landgrafenborn spring area. Mixed forest is part of the route, as is a paved farm track.

Along its course, the route follows the paved farm track to Rebgeshain and then continues along the edge of the village towards Ulrichstein. The moderate difficulty rating and the length of 33.2 kilometres are important reference points for personal tour planning. At the same time, a mountain bike loop of this kind is clearly different from a short walk through the village. You can therefore either focus your stay on the village’s history or plan a longer day in the nature park.

Community and Carnival in Rebgeshain

The village community centre is associated with the local carnival tradition. By 2025, carnival in Rebgeshain had been held there for 33 years. By 2025, the Rebgeshain carnival guard had taken part in the village’s carnival celebrations for 30 years. At a carnival event in the village community centre in the Rebgeshain district, the local associations’ community also opened a series of carnival events in the municipality of Ulrichstein.
