Großropperhausen: Half-timbered Houses, Manor Estate and Trails in the Knüll

Großropperhausen combines a villagescape shaped by the Knüll with historic sites, the manor estate, the Ohetal nature reserve and trails through open countryside and woodland. The village is also home to the Art and Crafts Courtyard with its sculpture garden and a heated outdoor swimming pool.

Villagescape between the Knüll and Half-timbered Houses

Großropperhausen lies in the wooded heights of the Knüll. Numerous half-timbered houses shape the villagescape and give the village a distinctly historic architectural character. The “Ohetal near Großropperhausen” nature reserve extends across the districts of Großropperhausen and Spießkappel and covers 65.7 hectares.

Manor Estate, Courtyard Complex and Baroque Garden

The Großropperhausen manor estate consists of six buildings and three ancillary buildings. The associated courtyard complex was renewed and fortified between 1706 and 1724, replacing the old castle.

The manor estate includes a walled Baroque garden that was part of a former, generously designed park. A Celtic cross stands in front of the manor chapel: the base is made of Irish bluestone, while the cross is made of local limestone.

Historic Sites in the Village

Historic sites in Großropperhausen include the remains of a medieval castle, the Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of the village and the former synagogue. The former synagogue is now used as a residential building.

The Jewish cemetery lies approximately 200 metres north of and above the built-up area of Großropperhausen, at the edge of the forest, and covers 1,032 square metres. It can be reached via a farm track that branches off to the left at the beginning of Kirchberg road, at house number 3. Access therefore leads from the start of Kirchberg road along a farm track towards the edge of the forest.

Hiking Trails through Open Countryside and Woodland

The Wonderful Forest Bath hiking trail leads through open fields and along the edges of the forest. The route offers wide-ranging views, bodies of water and short sections through woodland. Those planning the route will therefore encounter open and wooded sections as well as bodies of water.

The Lullus Trail leads from Bad Hersfeld through Großropperhausen to the manor chapel. Großropperhausen lies along this route between Bad Hersfeld and the manor chapel.

Art and Crafts Courtyard

The Art and Crafts Courtyard with its sculpture garden in Großropperhausen offers private group tours. In addition, since 2007 the Art and Crafts Courtyard has held three five-day chainsaw carving courses every year. Each of the three courses lasts five days.

Once a year, the Art and Crafts Courtyard gives the wider public an insight into its studios. To this end, it plans a cultural programme for the day. The annual studio open day supplements the tours and courses with this planned day programme.

Cycling Route and Outdoor Pool

On Open Monument Day, the Radspaß im Norden route recommends a detour from Frielendorf to Großropperhausen to visit the Manor Estate Academy there. The route names Frielendorf as the starting point and Großropperhausen as the destination of the detour.

Another leisure option is the heated Großropperhausen outdoor swimming pool. It has just under 600 square metres of water area, including a paddling pool for children. The water area of just under 600 square metres explicitly includes the children’s paddling pool.
