Marktredwitz: Auenpark, Trails and Egerland Culture

Getting to and finding your way around Marktredwitz

Marktredwitz has a direct connection to the A 93 motorway and is also an important railway junction. The Nuremberg–Cheb and Munich–Hof railway lines meet here. From the main railway station, you can reach the town centre on foot in just a few minutes. This makes it easy to combine a train journey with a stay in the town centre; if you are planning to travel by car, the direct motorway connection is another useful point of reference.

Hiking, cycling and Auenpark

The Goldsteig trail begins at the Drei-Bögen-Brücke in Marktredwitz’s Auenpark. Its first stage leads from Marktredwitz to Friedenfels, giving hikers a clearly named starting point and destination for this section. Two long-distance cycle routes also pass through Marktredwitz: the “Donau-Naab-Saale” and the “Main-Eger-Elbe.” Hiking and cycling therefore offer different ways to include the town in a longer tour.

Auenpark itself also offers reasons to spend time outdoors: there are picnic spots overlooking Lake Auensee and paths for strolling alongside planted flower beds. The “Überschaubar” viewing platform on the boiler house of the former Benker textile factory offers a special view. From there, you can see across Lake Auensee to the neighbouring MAKBAD outdoor pool. The park paths, the lake and this viewpoint offer different perspectives on the same part of town.

Egerland culture in Marktredwitz

The Egerland-Kulturhaus is dedicated to preserving Egerland traditions. It houses the Egerland Museum, the Egerland art gallery, the museum café, the town library and the office of the Euregio Egrensis Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bayern e. V. The permanent exhibition at the Egerland Museum presents the life, history and culture of the Egerland. The art gallery focuses on a collection of works by artists from the Egerland who have a strong connection to their homeland.

The Egerland Fountain in the Kulturhaus grounds is also part of the cultural landscape: its four levels depict an Egerland peasant wedding. Visitors interested in traditions and regional art will find a range of subjects in one place, from everyday history and culture to artworks and a visual portrayal of wedding customs.

Seasonal traditions and activities

During the Marktredwitz Nativity Scene Trail, the “Kripperer” open their homes in the town and surrounding districts, share anecdotes and often display Marktredwitz landscape nativity scenes that fill entire rooms. Marktredwitz’s nativity scene tradition has been included in Bavaria’s “Intangible Cultural Heritage” register. As the trail’s dates are seasonal, check the schedule for the year of your visit in advance.

In the run-up to Christmas, the Marktredwitz Adventszauber is another seasonal reason to visit. The Christmas market takes place in the atmospherically lit Glasschleif and features decorated stalls, live music and shows that change daily, activities for children and food and drink. The recurring description gives the period as late November to late December, Thursdays to Sundays; exact dates vary by year and should be checked for your travel plans.

For cycling trips, the Tourist Information office rents out high-quality CUBE e-mountain bikes and e-touring bikes during the summer months, approximately from April to October. This timeframe is approximate, so check availability before your trip. When planning, you can choose between touring on your own bike and using this seasonal rental service.
