Wildsteig lies on the watershed between the Ammer and Lech rivers and is the highest-elevation municipality in the Weilheim-Schongau district.

Geographical setting
The municipality’s area ranges from 830 to 1,589 metres. Wildsteig is located within Bavaria’s largest landscape conservation area; several nature reserves are also situated within the municipality.
The Ammer Gorge, the Schleier Falls, the waterfalls at the Soyer Mill and the Scheibum are located in Wildsteig. The Illach also rises in the municipality and flows north into the Lech.
Maulkopf, Hochschergen, Kleinwachsbichel and Brameck are located in the area surrounding Wildsteig.
In the wider regional area around Wildsteig are Hohenschwangau Castle, Hirschberg Castle on Haarsee and the Schaller Chapel.
Wildsteig can be reached via the A7 and A95 motorways.

Wildsteig preserves a rural and farming character with agricultural traditions, living customs and a long-standing local tradition.
Viewpoints offer changing perspectives of the Allgäu, the Ammergau Alps, the Loisach Valley, the Karwendel and the Blue Land, as well as views across the municipality.

Wildsteig’s village character is shaped by the Kirchberg hill and the parish church of St. James, set against the backdrop of the Tannheim Alps.
Wildsteig is located in the Pfaffenwinkel region and is connected to nearby excursion destinations including the Wieskirche, the palaces of Ludwig II and the region’s monasteries and Baroque churches.
