Wildsteig offers a network of cross-country ski trails around 22 km long for winter days, with classic and skating tracks. As the trails are groomed by volunteers, not all of them are always groomed. If you are looking for accommodation for a cross-country skiing trip, take the changing trail conditions into account when planning your day.

Planning a cross-country skiing trip: the network and Trail 2
One specific loop in the network is Trail 2: it runs between Schwaig and Unterhäusern, is 5.0 km long, and is also suitable for beginners. This provides a manageable route to use as a guide, alongside the total length of the trail network. Before setting off, check whether your chosen trail has been groomed.
The routes at the Wildsteig Nordic Walking Centre offer another way to choose trails by length. They measure 4.9 km, 8.5 km, 10.5 km and 14.5 km. The different distances make it easier to compare the planned distance without specifying a particular walking time or difficulty level.
Compare circular walks by distance and time
Circular Walk W2 starts at the car park opposite the bakery in Wildsteig and leads through the Illach Gorge to the MĂĽhlegg viewpoint. It is about 8.5 km long and takes approximately 2.5 hours to walk. Trail conditions can change with the seasons, so it is advisable to check them before setting off.
Circular Walk W4 starts at the car park by Wildsteig community hall, leads past the Wieskirche and returns to Wildsteig. The 11.5 km route is listed as taking approximately 3 hours. By comparison, W2 is both shorter and has a shorter estimated walking time; the Wieskirche is part of the route described for W4.
Several longer trails also pass through Wildsteig: the King Ludwig Way, the Munich Way of St. James and the Meditation Trail. For cyclists, the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route and the Ammer–Amper Cycle Route run through the village. These names can help you plan your trip around hiking, pilgrimage or cycling, without combining the routes into a single trail.
Alpine foothill scenery, views and local history
Wildsteig is set in a hilly Alpine foothill landscape at the watershed between the Ammer and Lech rivers. From Wildsteig, there are views of the Ammergau Alps, the Allgäu, the Blue Land and the Lech Rain. The landscape and viewing directions offer a point of reference alongside the choice of specific ski trails and walking routes.
Local cultural sites include the Lourdes Grotto, considered the largest grotto complex in southern Germany. It underwent extensive renovation from 2019 to 2022. The parish church also has a connection to local history: it was refurnished by Provost Ambrosius and given an elegant tower; the work was completed in 1785.
Accommodation and practical points of contact
Pilgerhaus Wildsteig is a renovated former community building that is listed as a historic monument and is run as a pilgrims’ hostel. If you are considering staying there, check the current booking conditions. There is also a bicycle repair station at Pilgerhaus, Kirchbergstraße 25, with a pump, hanging brackets and various tools for minor repairs. If needed, check the station’s operating condition on site.
Horse-riding lessons for children can be booked with Frau Gindhart at Hauserwirt, Hausen 4 in Wildsteig. It is best to confirm the dates when booking. Schwaigsee near Morgenbach has sunbathing lawns, a car park, changing cabins, a kiosk and sanitary facilities. The availability of these facilities may change outside the peak season.
