Local History and Art
The parish church of St. John the Baptist houses a Late Gothic Madonna from the circle of Hans Leinberger, possibly even by the artist himself. It was created in the early 16th century, when Heideck belonged to Bavaria-Landshut. The attribution therefore leaves open whether the work is by Leinberger himself.
On a walk through Heideck, visitors encounter traces of the town’s eventful history. Eva Schultheiß leads visitors through various streets to notable buildings and explains how they came about and their key details. The walk thus connects the history of individual buildings with a route through the town.
The nationally renowned Heideck Heimatfest takes place on the third weekend in July. As the exact date varies from year to year, check the municipality’s current event listing before your trip.
Routes Through Heideck and Its Surroundings
The fully asphalted Gredl cycling and hiking trail passes through SeiboldsmĂĽhle, a district of Heideck. It is suitable for hiking, cycling and skating; there are also routes of varying difficulty. The continuous asphalt surface and the different difficulty levels are two distinct features to consider when choosing a route. Check local conditions before setting out.
The Heideck Castle Trail leads from Heideck via Liebenstadt to the Altenheideck castle site, back to Liebenstadt and on to the SchloĂźberg castle site and Rudletzholz, before returning to Heideck. The route links several named places and castle sites. The SchloĂźberg castle site is about 3 km southwest of the town. The plateaus of the outer and main castles, as well as two substantial neck ditches, remain there.
The Altenheideck castle site is also a historical landmark in the Heideck area: in 2007, vegetation was cleared, the site was surveyed, and an observation platform was built to provide access. The Laibstadt Historical Trail, by contrast, explores the area around Laibstadt. The village is 950 years old and politically belongs to the town of Heideck. The routes described therefore lead to different historical topics and connections with local places.
Nature, Group Activities and Outdoor Swimming
The “Höfener Hohlweg” nature trail passes through geologically distinct zones and three different habitats. Four information boards introduce important native animal and plant species. Typical indicator plants are marked with labels and QR codes. The boards and markers give the trail a focus on natural history.
At the SchloĂźberg Family Adventure Trail, the low ropes course has 23 elements arranged in a circular route. The course offers playful competition and cooperative group use. It thus provides a different kind of shared activity from routes focused primarily on local history or nature.
During the summer season, Heideck’s municipal outdoor swimming pool offers more than 1,000 m² of water surface, and the water is heated. The pool has a 16-metre wide-wave slide in the non-swimmers’ pool and a 5-metre diving tower at the diving pool. It operates seasonally. Check the current regulations before your visit.
