Culture and History

As part of the Bavarian administrative reform of 1971, the present-day municipality was formed by the merger of Buch a.Erlbach and Garnzell; in 1978, the western part of Vilsheim was added. Until secularization in 1803, Buch am Erlbach was the most important Hofmark of Frauenchiemsee Abbey. The name addition “am Erlbach” has been documented since 1431.
